I'd suggest you read up on the composition and structure of jazz music in general.

Agreed. You'd be surprised how many components and techniques of modern music are derived from jazz. It's really amazing.

I suggest you check out someone named Zackery Wilson (google him)... he does a lot with 8bit and jazz... Its really cool... Also, some really popular game soundtracks are jazz and you may want to look back on those (Chrono Trigger, Sonic, etc.)
