I was trying to open some of my old SAV files on bgb and i cant quite get it, so a step by step walk through would be greatly appreciated.

Please don't recommend these forums, they didn't help;

Edit:

These SAV files are from the smart cards

Name your LSDJ.gb file 9_HEART_RULES.gb.
Then name your LSDJ.sav file also 9_HEART_RULES.sav, put them into the same folder and then load your 9_HEART_RULES.gb file into bgb.

It can't fail.

I did my best to try and figure it out, but to no avail. My only suggestion would be to download a different emulator, such as VBA, that can load a SAV file that you choose. There appears to be no battery file option for BGB, although it is a superior emulator.
