He's not running a DAW; he's using Famitracker with the VRC6 expansion mod. Also, .nsf is the NES sound file format. Chipmusic.org has a built in java-based .nsf player, and .nsf's are the standard audio output for Famitracker.
DUDE! Sweet track dude. The riff is great and the drums area crisp. The bass line really makes the song flow. This song makes me wanna go play "Balloon fight" now... XD anyway, awesome track, the riff in the second part really blasted the track! That lead in the second part is killer! The whole track flows really well. Color me impressed. 
If you don't mind... What's ur DAW? I'd love to know. There are alot of DAWs out there and I'd love to know ur preference. I have Reason 6.5.1 and its good but its not really... "Meant" for 8bittery. yes, that's a word now, 8bittery. 
Good stuff. Harder-hitting drums during the second part would be great.
