Yo guys. I am in the market for some headphones to use all studio like. I need something sturdy, preferably passive, detachable wire, and budget would be nice. right now i am rocking some Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling things. It isnt what i need for mastering and late night sessions. any advice? So far the only ones that i have found that match the description were the beats pro studio headphones.
would much rather have some expert opinions and more educated minds in on this so suggestions please!!!!!!!!

Personally, I know a friend who has a pair of headphones that are almost perfect for everything. And they aren't expensive at all, but it involves a little tinkering. What he did is found a pair of nice loud, bassy on ear headphones and put them in over the ear workers ear muffs. Here is the inspirational video by an awesome man smile

I switch between Nixon RPMs, Beats Studios and the earbuds that came with my iPhone. The stuff I use is too expensive and/or colors the sound and isn't great for mastering.

How about you tell us what your budget is?

Recently bought a BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pro
Relatively flat response and not too much dynamics. Really comfortable if you're using them for long periods. Quite a good isolation from surrounding noise.

I heard the 880 are even better, worth a try maybe.

I think for the price they are superb if you are forced to monitor through headphones. I say forced because ideally you'd want to be monitoring through studio monitors, alas not everyone can afford a nice pair and/or use monitors when they need to (sharehouse?)

BUT if you can use monitors but just want to spend the same ammount of cash you might on some good studio headphones then I'm hearing really good things about these little puppies.

$300 introductory price. Getting some rave reviews.

I was joking about those last few but the Audio Technica ATH-M50's have been getting great reviews.

I have to disagree with you. Sure, it might make for a good pair of stero headphones to listen to an MP3 player or whatever (I'm personally not convinced it would) but it's highly unlikely that you'll get a flat signal response from

And when we're talking about studio headphones then that is what you're aiming for. Something that is representative of the "true" sound being produced from your output, with as little 'colouring' of the sound as possible. Not some massively isolating bass bin ear muffs.

For mastering I recently purchased AKG K702s. They are quality.
