Thing you linked is just a controller, but if you prefer using laptop I guess MPD is fine for controlling.
I used to have MPC500 which was awesome for live use and you can get used pretty cheap. I bought later on a beat up 1000 from friend, fixed it and I love it even more. But 500 is great machine, runs from batteries too.

Thanks for clarifying that! I'm actually *not* looking for a controller, so I appreciate the recommendation on the MPC500 (scouring ebay for deals ATM)
