Can anyone recommend a small recorder I can use to record live shows, either thru the mixer or not.

I don't know what kind of setup you are running, but typically most mixer have both Main signal out and headphone out, I would route the headphone signal out into my PC's audio input jack and record via Audacity.

if you don't want to bring your computer to shows, i highly recommend the tascam dp-004.

Zoom h4n it's a beast and records a crowd mic and line feed at the same time.

they also usually have a tape out, which is a much better choice

Also the zoom h4n shouldnt be too expensive on ebay. I would be surprised if you cant find it for 200 bucks ish,
