I'm investigating marginalised computer music technology for my degree research project (think General MIDI, Casio's 'phase-distortion' synths, underused oddities like the Yamaha CX5M) but I've been having trouble finding any relevant academic writing. I know essays on chipmusic exist (some written by members of this forum) so there's definitely been research in this field.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Ask littlescale, GOTO80 and Johan (of LSDj). I believe they've all written published papers about various aspects of chip music. There are one or two more people still who have asked me for advice on the topic, but then I'd have to dig through my endless inbox for names/contact details.

search these titles and you may find them.  maybe more.
better yet if you pm me I could send them to you.             I got them in a file folder full of MIDI stuff for an old keyboard I bought, don't know exactly where they came from though.

Don't know if this is helpful or not, but I found this in my uni library the other day, pretty good fun:
