oh wow
hey I'll try to get this running on my Nomad and a first Gen Genesis later this week if that's helpful
I mean, I'm gonna do it anyway because WOW but let me know if a report on how that goes is helpful.

Light blue on red?
To make it an authentic tracker.
Fantastic work! This is going to make a lot of people, including myself, very happy. Great to hear you'll be changing the colour scheme soon. What were you thinking?! The colours in the screenshots look terrible I'm sorry to say. Please, no pink or red default colours.
Also, +1 for PAL support please.
And I know it's early in development, but it might affect the whole structure of the code so I'd like to make a feature request: Live Mode a la LSDJ would be awesome.

Sure thing, that would be very helpful. In theory it should still work just fine, but there have been incompatibilities with certain games on the different systems.

That bad? I was going for a Casino/Carnival Night Zone kind of a look, but I guess that didn't work out too well. Oh well.
Don't worry, I haven't yet started on the actual playback engine, Live mode will be kept in mind as I'm doing the playback engine.
(Very) quick blurb posted @ http://www.radiograffiti.org/ymdj-sega- e-tracker/
Very nice work. I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses.
So... umm... I can't help but notice the song screen has 24 steps instead of 16?
I love that other trackers are using the lsdj interface. It makes it so easy to learn new software. This is dope and I can't wait until it works well enough to make me buy a nomad.

More efficient use of RAM, The Genesis by default only has 64kb, and half of that is already occupied, so base 16 is used.
you can always not use them. Ui suggestions : have some sort of page indicator scrolling left to right so you know how many channels you have left, or perhaps a info row at the bottom that shows what notes are playing on which channel and highlight which channel the cursor is on.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The top right corner of the screen displays the current channel. It is planned for the right hand side of the screen to display which notes are playing on which channels, as described in the todo section.
Whooops! I meant note entry screen as opposed to song screen. Just seems super wrong to me? maybe there's something I'm missing.

Oh yes! Good eye. First thing is that I haven't added vertical scrolling to this screen yet for one, so you can't see all the rows yet. But here's the fun part, I'm going to make it so that the user can customize the number of rows here. There will also be line highlighting support. So if you want to write in triplets or odd time measures you can use line highlighting and set an odd number of rows to facilitate this. The grand maximum number of rows is 1F, or 31 including the zero (which is great for 4/4 stuff and fast melodic phrases). But you would be able to set it to something like 17 in hex, or 23 in decimal including the 0, for 6 rows per beat (for triplets in 4/4 time). Line highlighting I'm sure is self explanatory, but it's to customize which rows are highlighted to help guide the songwriting process in keeping on beat. In the example for 6 triplets per beat (you' could set it so that rows 00, 06, 0C, and 11 are highlighted for you, or however you want it. Hopefully that clears things up.

Ah! Very much so
Another question I must ask though, are you going to implement something similar to groove from lsdj as well? if so, that'll be pretty interesting to have both of those systems in place.

I can answer all questions similar to this with one answer. The idea is to meet the standard set by lsdj, and exceed it. Once I have the playback engine in place, I'll be able to start looking into groove. This will be a very powerful tracker once finished, that I can assure you.
This is really cool. Any chance of putting PCM samples on that thing?
