I'm starded to be happy with the way of organising instruments among the 4 chans... \o/
I still though have a last smallish issue: I used to layer a 909 sample with a noise clic to get a snare sound that actually pleased me A LOT
but I have to free some space on wav chan for more invading bass drops and get rid of the 909 samples
I've tried to mess up with P commands and transpose in a table on the noise side... but can't find something else than a rather crappy weacky ''mario-like'' clappy sound so far... yerk
not the actual end of the civilized world... but...
any idea of a table to get some real convincing snare on NOI only ? there surely is a way... surely it's even rather simple and in front of my eyes...
The things that I like to do: Using deeper tones for my snare. Try going from a deep tone to a higher tone. It makes a nice thwack sound. Make it smack you in the face, whip you in the butt. *FW'PAH! *
I personally enjoy noise+pulse snares, a la C64 (but i make mine less sneezy sounding) (my song "Brittle" on here has that). Also if you don't mind a "side-chain" style effect, you can go ahead and keep in the 909 samples sometimes and just have the bass "fade" in and out whenever the snare hits. I hear them gameboy EDM people do that all the time.
Or instead of noise+pulse, you can do noise+wav and make a table for your wav bass that has an attack that layers over your noise snare to give it more body. You can make the attack short enough that the bass note won't be noticeably absent. Check out this very convincing wav+noise kick/bass/snare work, dude :o Edit: oops, forgot the youtube link.
Joe McAlby doing some really cool noise+wav kick/snare/bass stuff on Gameboy Color without it really interfering with the bassline. That snare sounds awesome. Basically sounds like an lsdj kit sample, but since he designed it manually from the ground up he has more freedom to quickly reincorporate the bassline into the sound after the attack without being stuck with switching between either "wav notes" or "kit samples".
Feel free to search the forum for LSDj drum patches. I know we've had a few threads where people posted their settings or screenshots of their instruments.
assuming this is LSDJ: i like to start with a toned noise (something like C3 or C4) and then morph it into whitenoise with a S command really quick, just make sure your noise type is free instead of stable. the big thing for more "edm" chip stuff (and edm in general i guess) is the stereo snare trick, where you put a really quick left to right (or vice versa) pan at the top of the table, then center it straight away.
if you can fit a kinda high-pitched wav kick kinda sound (more like a tom drum really) under the noise snare then you'll get a really big sound going.
Oh yeah. Periodic noise is really fun. Cuts through pretty nicely. Incorporate that into your snares for real, yo. I need to finish my lsdj stuff from last year >.<
It's been awhile since I've used LSDj so i don't remember the exact numbers involved. I use the TSP column instead of S Commands for whatever reason. In my mind basically you have four classes of noise sounds. Deep crunchy ones for kicks, high ones for snare, and even higher ones for cymbals, and the periodic sounds for bzzzzzzzzzzzzt noises and ride bells, lol. And everything in between.
If you sweep from a lower sound to a higher sound it has kind of a *fwap!* whip-like feel to it that can be more powerful than your standard "mario" snare, hehe. Combined with Victory Road's method of putting a periodic click on the attack or something. But Like i said i don't remember the actual numbers for it. (aw... i just realized this mp3 didn't even upload completely)
I probably use too many commands on my noise channel tables for a DMG to handle, haha. I think the snare in that sweeps through most of the four sound categories i named earlier.

You could always get another Game Boy, cart and a link cable. I realize this isn't the ideal solution, but it worked for me and allows you to have WAV bass and kits. Honestly, kits for tracks I wrote with WAV bass are pretty much all I've been using 2xLSDJ for, other than some extra little touches here and there.
well to be honnest I first don't have the motivation to get all this gear... and overall
- I have a very little use of the GMB compared to my other instruments - can't think about bringing a lot of gear along with me as I mostly play music outside, and game boy is the ''when I have 2mn free'' instrument
If I can't find what I want with this configuration (the ''whip snare'' is not really what I'm searching for) I'll go back on Wave fat-Kick+909snare+shitty bass with some additional noise clap and PU1bass as I do now

If push comes to shove you can always make everything quieter so your noise stands out more
Also I dont know if you know how to create a kick/bass, but basically I like to put a Pitchbend with a high TSP on the first few rows of a table and then throw a pitch-bend off and a quick TSP to reset the pitch to get the bass tone.

TSP CMD 12 PEE 00 --- 00 --- 00 P00 01 --- 00 --- ... That's the gist of what i like to do. There are other ways and variations... season to taste for your snaring purposes. Adjust/add/remove TSP and Pxx commands and stuff, ya know. I think you can put the TSP and P00 on the same row and it'll work, but I'm not sure. One time I used the synth screen to make a growly bass, then manually drew triangles on the first few frames so the smooth kick would turn into a growly bass at the appropriate time.
