Has anyone used one of these? Is it actually 100% compatible as far as software goes? Would it be better to just use a emulator at this point then have this piece of hardware.

Note: FPGAs rule.

Does it only emulate the A500?

Yes, it only emulates an A500, and tries to do so to as much perfection as possible.
I have heard some issues with them but have no experience with one.
I really, really like the WinUAE emulator on PC, is one of the best emulators ever and a great tool if you have a real Amiga (I use it a lot to test stuff, I have a ghost copy of my Amiga running in it).
Having one of these for gigs and Protracker might be cool though, but only if it accepts some sort of hard drive-like storage system in it, because using emulated floppies is probably a pain in the arse (fuck load times). I;m not sure about compatibility ratings but it seems to be pretty high, the Amiga, once a mysterious beast, is very well documented nowadays, and Toni Wilen, creator of WinUAE, makes an awesome job at discovering new hidden and illegal processor opcodes and implementing them by emulation.

You might want to check this thread out. Alleges 99% cmpatibility with software:

Another one:

It seems it can also work at 28Mhz, that could improve working on tracks. You could actually run Musicline Editor with it.

http://www.natami.net/index.htm just discovered this last night. Looks like they're working on a new native Amiga compatible machine without emulation, a 68060 processor, and AGA compatibility. Will definitely be interesting to see how things develop.

I've thought about buying the Minimig but emulation has been serving me well enough so I can't justify buying new spiffy hardware. Personally, I'd go for a used A1200 and one of those ADF transfer kits that they sell on ebay.

Natami is tremendously vapourware. It will never happen I think.
The whole "project" is shrouded by lies and inconsistencies and fortunately no new "announcements" have been made for ages.
