ARNIE'S FAVORITE MUSIC MAKING APPS 2016 EDITION!

These are the Android apps that I immediately install on all my devices.  They are my favorites for music and chiptune.

FYI my current devices are Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (5.0), Nextbook Ares 11 (5.0), and a Chinese netbook (4.something)

My OldBoy! GBC Emulator (has a free version)

My OldBoy let's you LSDJ (Little Sound DJ http://www.littlesounddj.com/lsd/) on the go with pretty good sound and perfect sav file handling. Gameboy Cart Tool will let you manage those savs and import/export lsdjsng files as well as flashing your EMS cart! Essential!

Piggy time! PPSSPP has gotten very good at running LGPT (Little GamePark Tracker aka The piggy http://littlegptracker.com/) on every device I've tried it on (takes some fiddling with graphics settings at first). The Caustic Editor will let you record, trim, normalize, etc all your piggy food.

I'll admit I rarely (ok never) end up finishing tracks in Caustic but it's just so damn nice and interesting I can't not recommend it. A fully packed synth/sequencer environment for all your noodling needs.

And here's the icing on the cake. AEM is a full-blown DAW with its own USB audio and midi drivers, plug-in FX, and unlimited tracks, buses, inserts, DAMN THIS THING IS BOSS! This is the kind of app that makes me super excited for mobile music making. heart

I use retroarch for gambatte to use lsdj on android. I haven't gotten PPSSPP and LGPT to work on my samsung galaxy 3 yet. Maybe support is better now and it'll work better?

PPSSPP does take some adjustments to get working with piggy but once you have it set up it runs very well.
Retroarch still doesn't make full 128k Sav files tho, right? Same for gbc.emu which is based on it. Sound is nearly perfect but you can't integrate it with normal lsdj savs like you can with songs made in My OldBoy.

I'd second pixitracker - it feels like real thought was put into how to easily make music with it, even on a phone. I wish there were more music mobile app with interfaces like this.

My only caveat with it is the lack of export options... would love either a midi or .it export to work on it elsewhere afterwards!

Device edit:

My devices were a samsung s2 mini and a galaxy s3 and it worked pretty good on both. I'd say with the s2 mini, the best setup was with 4 channels.

I've used the 1-bit Pixi but not the regular one. I'll give it a go!

PixiTracker rocks. I like  Groove Mixer for piano roll sample and loop sequencing. Not sure if it's actually good or not, though, hehe.

I don't generally have very good results from audio applications in Android. Maybe my devices just aren't powerful enough. Latency is just a /tiny/ bit too much, and audio recording always glitches out for me.

But pixitracker... i need to buy that. 10/10 It actually makes sense on a touchscreen device

I especially like we can move and customise the GB buttons so it can help to get a more accurate keypress (especially for the "select" button we can make bigger). It also sounds close to the original.

Does John GBC make 128k savs that are usable on carts?

I think so because I began to work on a tune on my android phone (Nexus 4) then transfered it to the cart on my GBC and back to John GBC without problem. You can give it a try.

Sweet. That's the main reason I use My OldBoy. Good to know there's at least one other that makes proper savs!

oh i have a samsung galaxy tab A 9.7 which has a fairly big screen which might make it easier to track on
