Not sure if it's the same as linux but try running lsusb in a terminal. While the cart is plugged in.
Edit: NVM, just googled it and it's not on osx. Go to Applications->Utilities->System profiler and see if you can see the EMS cart listed.

I have exactly the same problem, in xubuntu. It's put my writing chiptunes off for a few weeks, I can't figure it out.
FIGURED IT OUT - I wish I could "tag" those other guys who had the problem - just had to run the program as root, using sudo.
