Oh yeah and The Phantom is awesome aswell.
Don't often read graphic novels, but I recently enjoyed this:

I stumbled upon a flier with example pages for this the other day and it looks pretty interesting.
Talking about examples, Warren Ellis has a webcomic here and a rather entertianing blog here.
Two more european name drops:
I enjoyed Enki Bilal's Nikopol trilogy (got a so/so movie) and Régis Loisel's Peter Pan and Quest for the Time-bird, although if the latter two qualify as graphic novel is debatable.
Quite a few titles I haven't read yet in this thread, very neat
Oh, and just because I haven't seen it mentioned: If you want a warm and fuzzy flashback to the time you were a kid and dreamed about knights and castles, Hal Foster's Prince Vailant will send you there pronto. Foster made amazing artwork with a very classic story, it's hard to put down once you start. A publisher here started a reprint with the restored colour version. Having grown up with the black and white, I was a bit skeptical, but it's beautiful- a lot of detail was killed by removing the colour, and the restored version looks fantastic.
I really like Jhonen Vasquez's Johnny The Homicidal Maniac, he also did Squee!, Everything Can Be Beaten and I Feel Sick. All really good.
I've just finished Scott Pilgrim recently, loved it.
There's this graphic novel called The Clarence Principle, which I loved.
Hatter M is awesome.
I've been reading a lot of Batman recently, Jokers Asylum, Year One, Year One Hundred, Hush, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House...
Robert Crumb's Genesis. Almost forgot about Crumb.

haha I have this as well - Genesis with tits! Found it a bit heavy going though and gave up, as with my other attempts to read the bible.
I guess we could go Gilbert Sheldon, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Fat Freddy's Cat. Stinking hippy stuff!
Agree with a lot that have already been mentioned. I'd add;
Preacher (unless someone said it already, if not...c'mon people!)
Scalped ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalped )
Fables ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fables_(comics) )
The Boys ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boys_(comics) )
Crossed ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossed_(comic) )
No one has mentioned Sin City? Really?
DIsclaimer: havent read the whole thread, but...
Preacher

Hey I hear Preacher is good. Also Thunderbolts: Caged Angels if you wanna read one of the strangest books in the normal Marvel cannon.

I did. Cause it's awesome.
1 - the Crow by J OBarr, best comics story ever.
2- Kabuki by David Mack
3- Domu by Otomo
4- Incal by Moebius
there are few more comics I like, but not many.
I used to love Crumbs pieces, long time ago. Now I only like his blues artists portraits. !and girls of course :}
Schninkel by Rosinski was also a good piece of story.
