im going to have to say that nowhere in chicago really draws for chip gigs (or most types of electronic music, for that matter)...not saying it cant happen, but id say its unrealistic to expect more than 20 or so attendees for a chip gig in chicago... think the most ive seen was around 50 at an all-chip gig... think more people were at the night of gli.tc/h that minusbaby & nullsleep played, but that was roughly half gig, half loft party and they werent charging at the door

edit: also, why do gigs need names?

What you're saying doesn't give me much hope for a larger venue, but I do think that a chiptune scene can grow in Chicago. I'm starting to think that maybe I should get a show together at the Enemy, the loft/venue used to host the Gli.tc/h show, and get a bunch of local acts from around the midwest. If we're lucky we can draw a similar size crowd and maybe turn it into a monthly/bimonthly show if it's a success. Over time we can get larger crowds and work up to a larger venue. They're probably not gonna charge any or much money so they're isn't much to lose other than our time.

This is a step in the right direction, seeing as its not local it shouldnt be monthly, bi-monthly can work.  Would it be totally blasphemous to get some other acts that arnt particularly chip?  I think broadening the spectrum couldnt hurt the attendance rating, make it more appealing to more people.

edit:  after posting that i realized that gigs have names to make them more marketable see post.

There were these 3 guys (I don't remember their name) at Gli.tc/h that used a Playstation, NES, an Atari, and a Sega Genesis and they would fit perfectly at one of our show. They aren't chiptunes but they would definetly work at the show. edit they are more of visual/musical act. hard to explain with showing the video.  Pic of their set up I have a video of their performance here (uploading at time of post). Sure there are many other artist in the area that would like to perform that aren't chiptunes, but at the same time chiptune like music is the primary focus of the show. Also, most of the artist at Gli.tc/h could do AMAZING visuals for us.

I sent a tweet to @EnemySound asking to get in touch, since I can't find an email adress on their site.

i played at the house cafe once with doormouse. it wasn't packed at all.

How was it for a chiptune shows though? You know of any places in the city?

A freind recommended Subterranean but I think that place is a little big for us. We would have to bring a big name act to fill the place up to cover the cost and by "Big Name" I mean, someone like Anamanaguchi.

Bubblegum Octopus isn't hard to get a hold of. Just a suggestion tongue

how about we stop caring about how many people we can get to come out and just play?

i dont think we are selling ourselves short by keeping expectations low for turnout, you gotta start somewhere you know? if everyone who said they will play does, than at least we have the peace of mind that we're all playing for people who appreciate and love the music.

its not going to start at the subterranean for sure, but i have heard of plenty of house venues (mostly in logan square where my friends are at) that might be a good starting point.

we havent played a single gig with a chip band in the midwest yet and i would definitely like to change that if i can.

i dont think were worried about the turn out, as of yet, there are no official plans.  That being said plannings key, i think we all really obviously want an excuse to get together.  I checked out a record store in ferndale last night, the guy seemed interested to have us in there, but the place is really small, even if just the players showed up i cant see everyone fitting in there.  Also i checked out an italian restaurant that does a karaoke thing after 9:30 they seemed hesitant but willing, i gotta call the lady tomorrow.  Im still looking for a bar, though the italian place had one.

I'm still tracking down the Enemy Sound place, they're a little hard to get a hold of but would be a good place to play. Someone on reddit mentioned a place called The Empty Bottle and they are know for having obscure genres play there. I will have to look into it.

As much as I agree with Noisewave about selling ourselves short and not worrying about crowd size, we have to keep in mind the finical risk for both us and the owner of the venue. Thus why I think we should stick to small venues that are low in risk and cost, but not sell ourselves short. The house venues sounds good and it would be great if we can get the names of a few places.

We should worry about getting a show together and hope we pick up momentum from there.

A friend was mentioning that we could get I Fight Dragons to headline a show. Apparently they draw pretty large crowds, bigger than 200 people. We have maybe 3-4 opening acts and then IFD play. We could easily get a larger venue with them playing.

small venues make it so that less people have to come to make it feel like a DOPE-ASS PARTY (just sayin') big_smile

given average chicago turnouts, you may wish to look into renting a hotel room instead of a venue then

No details yet, talking with someone who has possibly offered a venue. It will have to be on a day that isn't Friday or Saturday. Show of hands if you would be interested in playing a show in Chicago within the next 3 months, what day you would like to play, and a range of time that works for you.

idk, rather than a big turnout, I would rather have it a little get together and not care who comes, give everyone 30min or so. Make some friends, drink some brews, and get chipsy lol.

As long as I have 2 weeks notice I'm good for any weekend!

I doubt I'd be ready to play a show... but if it landed on the right day, I'd do what I could to get from the other side of Indiana up to see it. Any chance of the venue being all ages?
