It's when you split anything in half. Literally "the division of something into two branches or parts."
In the context of the album it means that the soul is split from the body. This allows the protagonist to travel into the afterlife in order to commune with a dead woman.
Shawn - I hope you like it! It's pretty different from my other stuff, including the increased time investment to listen to the whole thing, but I'm very proud of the album.
