One final thingy, but it's by me. 
Just released a new years demo written in the Reaper sequencer. The JS script language has some quite powerful stuff in (like FFT manipulation and proper gfx blending) so I guess it could be used for making VJ effects. You can attach parameters to sliders quite easily and send/receive midi through it.
