It really is all about trial and error. I tend to get the best results when I let the guitar fill out the mix or accent the chip. I have the best luck when I keep the chip arrangements a little lighter to leave room for the guitar in the mix. But I'm usually doing acoustic guitar and it seems to take a little more work to get the mix sounding nice.
Just experiment.
I'm surprised I haven't seen any mention of AnimalStyle yet, dude gets one of the best blends of just pure lsdj and guitar. Here's an old video of his:
