There is an internal voltage regulator board which increases the voltage output to +5v and something like -20v. Nothing runs on the battery voltage alone.

Then what exactly is the power supply? I don't see any cords coming out of the MGB in that picture :S? Is the power source still the 2xAAA cells?

So the resistor was necessary to limit the amount of power the back light was drawing...

This is interesting. 2 AAAs produce the same voltage as 2 AAs, however the available amperage is about half. I find it hard to believe that a pocket with a backlight draws anything close to 1 amp while running.

I think I've figured out a way to eliminate the extra noise produced by the EL, it involves an amplifier external of the MGB's motherboard.

Hoping onapokoya chimes in, maybe Kitsch too.

Does anyone know if his EL back lights are going to be restocked or are they discontinued?

I'm unable to bump an old tread since I'm a new user so please see this thread:

http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/11317/eldmg-in-a-mgb/

It seems onapokoya is having trouble with rechargeable cells and EL back light in his MGB. This is probably due to the fact that all NiCd and NiMh rechargeable cells output 1.2Vs each whereas alkaline cells output 1.5V.

Did you figure out a solution? Can you confirm the voltage or types of cells you were using?

I really want to use an EL panel in an MGB with rechargeable AA cells, I can't stand non-uniform back lighting.

Carthik

Had this MGB painted yellow on the inside with white buttons for a few years now.  It's my writing machine.  But I just installed the el_dmg kit from kitsch and it came out well.  Accidentally killed a row of pixels but since it's my writing machine and not for sale, I won't try to fix it.  Not the best picture.  The yellow is actually pretty bright.  I all it the banana boy.

Other than the GBAmp2s are there any other amps available? I understand these are 2W amps, I've come across a YouTube video where someone had 6W output on their DMG.

Also, can the original speaker handle 2 Watts? Does anyone know of any higher quality speakers that share the same diameter as the GBC speaker (I believe it's 20mm). I see a lot of generic no name speakers on ebay...

Thanks,

Carthik

I figured they probably do but any specifics on size/type? Any reason these LEDs can't be changed out due to the way they're installed in this "kit"?

I'm considering this mod with LOCA for my GBC but I don't like the blue-ish LEDs that come with it. Does anyone know the size/type of LED these use? Any pictures of how they're mounted? I'd like to change them out for pure white LEDs.

Carthik

Thanks for the very informative post vucifer.

Can you elaborate on the fourth one?

I will be using my GBC for it's intended use, so I value image quality.

I like how it keeps the contrast. I don't think I'd mind uneven lighting if I can retain image quality. Plus, I will be installing a pot and a switch so I can adjust the lighting.

Why are the Kitsch Bent panels washing out the screens? Is it because the light source is too bright? Is the screen is not opotically clear? Or is it because of the way the light reflects off the screen? Has anyone figured this out? If it's simply because the light source is too bright, this can be solved by resistors or a pot, but that seems too easy.

I would really like to figure out a way to make the Kitsch Bent front lights acceptable for use, as it seems to be the easiest route to take, however if the problem lies within the actual glass/plastic screen of the light then I guess there's nothing that can be done.

Another annoyance of mine with the Kitsch Bent front light is the color of the LED, it seems to be blue-ish. I'd prefer a pure white. Does anyone know what type of LEDs the Kitsch Bent panel uses? I don't see why I wouldn't be able to change them out if I decide to go this route.

To me so far it seems that the best method to retain the GBC's image quality is just to have a/some LED(s) mounted inside the shell. I know it won't be uniform, but I think it'll keep the contrast. Has anyone done this? Any pics?

Cheers,

Hi ChipMusic,

I'm looking for a lighting option for my GBC.

Based on my understanding there is the AGS001 SP Frontlight mod, the Kitsch Bent front light, and the Kitsch Bent frontlight adhered to the LCD with LOCA.

I have an AGS101 and to be honest nothing seems to provide a quality looking screen on the GBC, however I have decided I need to use a GBC and need to figure out what the best method is for lighting the screen internally.

Has there been any progress in GBC screen lighting?

Are there any other options I'm missing?

Cheers,

Carthik
