Granted, as far as I know there isn't a whole lot you can do with it, but I've heard people talk about generating sounds with it, however basic. (can someone with more knowledge on this chime in! I'd like to know more about it...). It also has a dedicated noise generator too.
it does have a distinct noise generator, however there is not yet any DIY snes music method that utilizes the noise generator... also... it appears it has some sort of basic FM... seems like its only really for sound effects and not for music... because it creates non-tonal sounds - i only know this from using SPCTOOL... a program that imo is the best SPC player... it allows you to tweak some settings like the DSP and "FM" while a song is playing
also... people seem to forget to mention the SNES had flexible stereo panning compared to amiga or genesis
beyond this there may be more synth-capability... but this is all i know
ok time for me to chime in - as some of you said... SNES has a distinctive sound even tho it is sample based
1) the ADPCM decoding mutates the samples a bit
2) the DSP processor (delay/filter-EQ)
3) the samples themselves... a lot of SNES music re-uses the same samples - it seems that the SNES dev kit or some SNES tools came w/ a sample library... much like the ST-01 sample disk being the most heard samples in old amiga tunes
so... the best way to get the real SNES sound...
1) use OPENSPC for dos... to rip samples from SPC game music... you can turn the songs into IT files and...
2) use impulse tracker to take the samples and track out a song following the guidelines for...
3) SNESMOD - using snesmod you can convert your specialized IT files into SPC files and...
4) make a ROM and use a flash cart like the SNES power pak on retro-usb.com - im not sure if the SNES power pak has SPC playback built in or if you will have to make your own ROM
there are other ways to FAKE it but this is the way to get REAL snes sound - check out the latest pause comp for my first SNES song (coming soon)
my wife has a hard time explaining but tries to all the time...
she usually starts w/ something like:
"do you know what a cart is? like old nintendo... he takes those apart and puts music in them"
and the usual response is:
"i didnt know that was possible... so what... i can play mario with his music in it?"
boomlinde what software was the cx5 music here made w/?
EDIT:
i just read the description... from the looks of things the cx5 was probably only used as a sequencer... so... thats completely boring my friend - anyhow i think the sharp x68000 seems far more interesting than the cx5m (same fm chip)... and perhaps we can translate some MDX documentation and use it - what do ya say?
how about MDX? anyone here use that?
oxygenstar: i am working on an XPMCK genesis tune... complete w/ FM, PCM, and PSG - dont release the comp til i'm done
perhaps now is the time to use that new secret beta of famitracker that has VRC7 o.o
hey... is it ok to sneak in square wave channels if it's genesis, vrc7, or msx music?
here's a secret - or maybe its not a secret - there is a beta version of famitracker floating around w/ VRC7 and FDS capabilities
as usual i dont recommend using this particular yamaha product - any specific questions about it?
it would be a decent machine if someone would write a good tracker for it... it has one of my fav soundchips (YM2151 OPM)... but unfortunately the SOFTWARE for it is not good enough to push it into the realm of capcom cps-1 or sharp x86000 capabilities - using the yamaha software, you can only use 4 different instruments at once... maximum... that means... bass drum... snare drum... and 2 others (if you want drums that is) - thats the worst part - it has a built in square wave PSG (AY/YM chip the same as a normal MSX computer)... and unfortunately none of the yamaha software accesses this chip
instead of the CX5m i DO recommend an MSX computer w/ the built in yamaha OPL-L (vrc7/sms fm) - i believe the models which contain this are caled MSX2+ or MSX Turbo-R (i had the turbo at one point) - w/ a good tracker like "oracle" you can access the square wave channels and FM channels at the same time (!!!)
also the yamaha FB01 synth module contains the OPP chip... which is an OPM chip w/ out the noise generator but it has MIDI built into the chip - this unit allows you to get the full 8 voice multi-timbral action without any drawbacks - i used it on both "blast" albums - go for one of those options
thx a lot d00dz
little-scale wrote:Did you do the artwork?
yes... actually its a photograph i took which i sort of digitally air brushed... and the other artwork (waveform graphs) are screen shots of SCC Blaffer NT for the MSX computer (possibly the hardest to use tracker... aside from "music box" on gb )
dubmood wrote:why so offended Alex?
not offended... just sports are annoying to me... and i definitely dont see their relation to ultra nerdy chip music - the jocks are the ones who beat us up... remember?
Reteris wrote:I like it since you don't go into general discussion and end up seeing a bunch of posts about upcoming shows.
Also, the recent posts button works well if you don't want to click on every sub-forum that shows there are new posts.
But I see where your coming from...
thats why i listed "events"
anyhow im glad to see that people agree that less is better... i like herr prof's idea... if some dont catch on... they can go bye bye
thx guys - yeah i also recommend the album
its really not that expensive... i dont make you pay for shipping so in reality you're paying less than 10 dollars for it
ps - i only have to sell 20 more to have finally made the money back from getting the CDs pressed
