Haha, same here. Sometimes I wonder if I ever really liked RPGs or if I just was drawn to them by the music. I don't play many video games these days, but the soundtracks of some of my past favorites will always be etched in my mind...

Anyways, I started playing classical percussion under some very good band directors from age 9 up until high school. I've dabbled on keyboards for about that long, been playing piano for about 5 years or so mainly for composing purposes, though I can do some decent accompaniment performance as well. I also focused my undergraduate studies on ethnomusicology and have studied a fair amount of theory and music history.

Ironically, though I have a strong love for chip, I own next to no electronic instruments other than my DAW and MIDI keyboard. I have also been playing ukulele and guitar (classical, flamenco, and samba/bossa/mpb) for several years, and have in the past year or so begun studying tabla and Hindustani classical music under the tutelage of a well-accomplished ethnomusicologist.

I think the diversity of musical backgrounds is what makes chip such a strong medium--it's a vast blend of influences all under the blanket of chip instruments. Look at Sugiyama's battle theme for Mara and Nara in Dragon Quest 4--it's a straight flamenco cadence. And Uematsu took up music so he could be like Elton John.

I forgot to mention it last, but one of my alltime favorite chiptune artist is of course Radix and his best chip (for me) is the cute Paul the penguin! smile

YES. Go to chiptune.com and get everything by radix, beek, virt, loonie, and rez. Pretty much the inspiration for everything chip I do these days, in addition to the countless video games I played as a youngster.

If I had to pick a favorite track from each if you want a sample:

beek - margarita (it)

beek&virt - fruitbat (it) -  AWESOME chord progression, I had to include this one.

virt - lick the alphabet (it)

loonie - battery love (it)

radix... oh god. I love radix so much it's painful to pick just one track. But... I'd have to go with... weather girl (xm). But, listen to everything radix has created. EVERYTHING.

rez - little swedish girl (xm)

...I could go on for hours on just a handful of tracks by these artists, but I'll let them speak for themselves. These guys are gods to me, and if any of you are on this forum (hi rez!) thank you for being awesome.

I've found that putting the right amount of reverb on non-chip instruments tends to set them apart from chip leads without clashing. I've actually mixed classical guitar with a few chip tracks with great success. It's all about experimenting and finding what works. As yuh said, there are no rules in chip so just go for it--use your ears and take note of what works.
