I'm using GarageBand currently, seems pretty nice.

uhhh yeah, there are very few circumstances in which buying things will make you better at music
I meant that instead of using software and its built in effects to record, if I actually had some hardware then I could make similar quality recordings on my tape recorder.
Nothing about my music, haha.

Thanks Subway
I love it, but obviously there are times when it just doesn't live up to what I need. Maybe if I bought some actual compressors and gates and shit instead of just using software ones for decent recording then I could get it to sound nice. But... Meh, haha.
The pressure's on ._.

Everything on 8bc apart from the more recent upload of Nuke is a demo, as I previously said.
And I've never been told that the vocals don't fit at all - possibly that's your taste in music creeping in?
That track's only up on 8bc so I could send it to a promoter, and he said
"Hi
I really really like that. It reminds me a bit of the better end of Kid Carpet's stuff.
Copied to iPod.
Chris"
So yeah. I think that might be just your taste in music haha.
Anyway yeah, disregard 8bc recordings/read my post just above yours. Everything is just rough demos really - I prefer to record something and get feedback off other people first, rather than make a song and do fuck all with it.
If you want to hear some recordings that I actually regard as good, and should be releasing, PM me. Otherwise, disregard my 8bc stuff because it is almost all early demos (apart from the lo-fi stuff that is. But you can't judge lo-fi by how well it's recorded, hahah).

Re: So... How did you learn LSDj? (48 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
Yeah, exactly. By having some guidelines, it was really helpful in learning synthesis yourself (goddamn wave channel and it being weird! I still sort of suck at it for anything but bass).
I found LSDJ really intuitive though. The only other music software I'd ever used was Cubase, which I hated with a passion. LSDJ, to me, is pretty much perfect.
I love the look of Nanoloop, but the iOS version is just weird. I think I'm more of a tracker man.

Re: How to promote your music/yourself? (82 replies, posted in General Discussion)
Thanks dude!
I consider most everything on my 8bc (and in fact, almost everything I've recorded thus far) to be demos. You may notice, however, that there's two versions of the track Nuke. Check out the most recent one - it's from a recording session I did where I didn't record onto my tape recorder, spent some time doing it, used compressors and gates and reverb etc etc etc.
I plan on hopefully doing a release from these sessions, as they're of actually like, releaseable quality haha. If you're interested I'll drop you a download link, but yea.
Part of the reason I do consider the tracks demos (other than the rough recording obviously) is that I almost constantly evolve my songs. Mostly drums actually, but I always find myself going back to songs after a month or so and spending an hour or two just making everything tighter, and generally better sounding. I think a fair amount of stuff has reached as far as it can - or as far as I want it to - go organically, so yeah.
I did find a local label, who do digital and physical releases, and promotion. They also have a page basically telling people to not submit demos, and then ask people to submit demos. So I'm slightly apprehensive at that, haha. May well send something though, see what happens. Hopefully me and my couple of chip buddies will find a suitable venue - I think we're busking on Saturday at a science fest thing as well (Goto80 played during it last year iirc).

Re: How to promote your music/yourself? (82 replies, posted in General Discussion)
I suppose it's getting into a "normal" music scene that I have trouble with. I've always felt somewhat on the fringes of the chip community (I make a sort of mix between indie, punk and reggae, which is fairly uncommon in chipmusic haha), but still a part of it. Any gigs or anything though would be "normal", cause I actually kinda have more in common with "normal" artists than chip ones. Could play either really.
Coming into that as an outside - rather than naturally growing into it - is a little confusing, haha.

Re: So... How did you learn LSDj? (48 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
I read through SabrePulse's tutorial, and that was kinda it for a while.
Then a local guy called Spoonbender hosted a workshop thing, which I attended. I was the only one with previous knowledge of LSDJ, and so he taught me about tables and effects and shit. After that, just experimentation and stuff, seeing tips on forums. The patchbook (RIP) helped loads too.

also, someone mentioned this earlier but it wasn't addressed - maybe your town is just too small? what are the nearby towns like? is there a more active music scene somewhere else? if so, try getting a show there.
My town itself is fairly small, but it serves as a suburb for a larger city, which has a fairly active music scene.
I honestly can't tell if a lot of these comments are telling me my music is shit or not. Some of them seriously seem to be.
My problem isn't that I've sent people my music or whatever you're meant to do, and they have refused to give me shows.
It's that I have no idea what the fuck I need to do to move my music out of my bedroom. My friends know I do it, and that is pretty much it, and overcoming that barrier so I can get to doing gigs and stuff is something I just don't know how to do.
Some of the advice here has been very good. But a lot of it has been pretty pointless. Telling me to get better at what I do is a bit stupid (especially if you've not heard my music, or have only heard the demos I have on my Bandcamp), because I could be ridiculously amazing at something but still have no idea how to talk to promoters or whatever and get gigs and recognition. A lot of you seem to be totally missing the point. I'm not saying my music is amazing, but when you're 17 years old and trying to play any gigs, it doesn't matter. I know shitty Snow Patrol and Kings of Leon acoustic cover acts who get gigs. When I've played, the positive response has been absolutely overwhelming - however, it's just gigs organised by people at school.
I just can't break out of that.
That's probably the last time I'm gonna reiterate what I mean, and if people keep just saying "MAKE GUD MUSIC CUZ IT'LL GET U GIGZ" then I'll just let the thread die.
Yes, obviously it's a contributing factor. But I have no idea who puts on gigs, how to get in touch with them, etc etc etc, which I think is a much larger factor here.
A couple friends and I are looking at venues to possibly put on a gig. But yeah.
Thanks for everybody who gave actual relevant advice. Also, I'm sorry this thread became to personal to me. I really meant it to be more general and far-reaching, but oh well.

My experiences with netlabels have varied from "Yeah we'll release your stuff!" *fades into obscurity* to "Yeah man I loved your gig let's release music!" *fades into obscurity*
More sort of looking at local stuff, so I can hopefully gig off the back of any releases as well

plus, this kid says he has 300 or so people following his youtube channel, and unless he spammed them until they added him out of pity, sounds like he already has more fans according to the internet than i do
making music with fame being your goal can only lead to dissapointment or soul-crushing compromise (with a handful of rare exceptions)
My subscribers are for fingerboarding videos, not music. So I have a potential audience, but they aren't subbed to me to listen to my music.
Also, I only mentioned fame once, which was as a joke. I'm not talking about getting famous. I'm talking about getting a few more people to listen to my music, and getting any gigs, haha.
A couple mates and I are looking round some places to see if we can actually get anything anywhere. I'm friends with a promoter so hopefully he can spread the word, though admittedly he's been slightly useless in suggestions of local labels or anywhere that I can use as a springboard for my music.

In comparison to my brother, who has successfully been in bands since the age of 13, and regularly been playing gigs (as in at least 2 a month) since the age of about 14.
He was in a pretty run of the mill indie pop band, but there was these YMCA gigs and they pushed them forwards. Then he started a new band, still buoyed by the reputation from the YMCA gigs, and has now travelled down to London to be in magazines and shit.
He's 20, btw.
He had a bit of an easy passage, as he had this great way for people to hear his music and build a reputation, which hasn't existed for about 3 or 4 years now.
This probably sounds a bit like "jealous brother" or whatever, but it's seriously not. It's just that I don't seem to have any way of getting my name out there, like he did. I'm probably gonna have to do everything online, but I can't get past just Facebook friends.

Re: How to promote your music/yourself? (82 replies, posted in General Discussion)
That's all fine and well, but it's pointless to make music if nobody listens to it.
I was promised a support slot for Thomas Truax by a local promoter, but I think he forgot about it or something. It's worth noting that I only got offered that cause he runs a photography group I go to, and therefore knows me.
The YMCA stopped doing gigs, which is when the youth music scene here just kinda totally shut down.
U guiz got any tipzzzz for getting music out there online? I managed to get some listeners cause I covered a song by Johnny Foreigner, and they were kind enough to blog about it. But that's not much of a dedicated audience.
If anyone from a netlabel wants to hear, I could send them my release so far? haha
Actually, I just thought. A few shops near where I live ask for bands to contribute CDs and stuff for them to play. May have to burn a few and make a trip around~

Somewhat
Thing is though, I've been making chiptune for like, 2 years now? Put out a few releases, and had good feedback from friends and stuff - people over Facebook, basically. The thing I find really hard is getting over that barrier - I only seem to be able to reach those people that I'm in contact with over Facebook and whatnot. Due to there being no help for young musicians (no collective, like there used to be. Weekly gigs at the local YMCA, and a yearly showcase at a local theatre) I can only reach anybody I'm directly in contact with.
And even then, it only seems it's when people seem to feel obliged to listen. As I said, I posted a couple releases here/8bc, and got no comments whatsoever.
I'm currently re-recording stuff, recording new songs, putting together a properly solid release. But I've kinda run out of steam, because I just can't get it out to anyone.

See if local press will do a feature before an upcoming gig - it's not too late to use chiptune as a bit of a 'novelty' to get a bit of publicity. (inb4 butthurt 'srs bsns propa artist' musicians)
Do some cover songs - bitches LOVE cover songs - look at all the chipmusic covers of (recent pop hit here) that got (shit-tonnes of views on youtube) - if you're the first one to do a cover of a recent pop song, you're bound to get a few more views than usual!
Upload to youtube - bitches LOVE youtube
I've been meaning to film myself playing one of my covers and put it on YouTube actually, haha. I have like 300-odd subscribers, so y'know.
The problem with that, however, is that most of them are American.
I'd ask papers and stuff if I was actually doing a gig. But that's part of the problem - gigs just kinda don't exist for my age. Apart from school stuff, where the elitist cunt cover bands disclude me from posters and say that I'm "Less of a musician, more of an easter egg".
Also, this ended up being far more about myself than I meant it to be. I kinda wanted to just discuss promotion. Shit moods don't lend themselves well to making well-measured forum posts, haha.
