Night Animals is an album that was 3 years in the making. It is what we set out to do as BRIGHT PRIMATE, and we couldn't be happier to be finally sharing it with you, our friends and fans and internet associates. Its been an effort of love and we believe that it represents another small step forward in the evolution of chip music from a basement hobbyists pursuit to what we all know it can become.

There are so many people that have helped us shape this album, so many people who have inspired us or listened to rough mixes late at night or assisted us with their expertise in one way or another, and we would like to acknowledge some invaluable specifics: Carl AKA Radlib AKA Oxygenstar et al. for general solidness of character and always moving forward; Misfit Chris for many 5am chat sessions and lending me his ears on more than one occasion; Smiletron David for being a constant mellow optimist in the wee hours of the night; Disasterpeace Rich for setting the bar pretty high; Dan of the J. Arthur Keenes Band for showing us all just how great a vocal chiptune album can be. Boston8Bit, Toy Company, Bitmasters, 8Static, I/O, Chipwin, REboot, PAX and Magfest peeps; you know who you are. Nerd Rock Radio and Seaking's Seaglass too. Probably most of all though, thanks to you for listening to this record, whoever you are, because music is just two animals communicating in the night.

definitely. i think it is "the" topic for most hardware chip artists really

as part of one of the few "pop oriented" chip acts, i figured I'd chime in and give my 2 cents.

from my experience hanging out / working with legit producers, you would be surprised (or maybe not) at how a) knowledgeable and b) lazy they are. you can be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that most of them know about chiptune and probably at least have played with plogue if they dont actual own physical instruments that would be passable as "chip music" in either module form or, like, classic FM keyboards or whatever. I can't stress enough that these. guys. know. their. shit.

However, much like you they are at heart lazy-ass musicians and especially if they are working with talent that they only see as a paycheck they will opt for whatever sounds okay for the quickest, easiest route. They mostly dont care about pushing a musical agenda like we do (considering we are reading this on chipmusic.org) and are not "artists" really, more like craftsmen of music. They will co-opt whatever style seems "cool" at the moment, but usually only in the most shallow, path-of-least-resistance topical manner possible. You likely wont see them learning various tracker languages to make something authentic, they will simply get a sample pack and do it in ableton or logic or whatever, as they do, for a track or two then move on to Trap or Seapunk or whatever buzzword nonsense gets the checkbooks of behind-the-curve label stooges hot and wet.

They know their shit, they are not stupid, they certainly have talent and skill, but for the most part they have no spine or artistic integrity to speak of.

talking to steel workers about chiptune has got to be the most Milwaukee thing I've ever heard in my life, and I mean that in the best way possible.
