i re-read this thread a lot.

and march 10th will be the fifth monthly chip show i've set up in rochester. we've been really lucky not only in terms of getting great artists to come play here (anamanaguchi, starscream, g & j, zen albatross, j. arthur keenes, danimal cannon) but also in terms of finding an audience for chip music here. all of the shows have been well attended (and are becoming more well attended every month).

here's what i've learned.

1. communication is extremely important.
2. you can't do it alone. get your friends involved.
3. booking a show isn't enough, you need to promote the hell out of it.
4. develop relationships with local venues.
5. most areas can't support a 100% chip show, so don't book a 100% chip show.
6. look at what the most successful people do and emulate that.
7. learn from your mistakes.

I was curious today, and i was looking up the Rock Band 3 keyboard peripheral, and i started wondering, since there's the MIDI port on the keyboard, wouldn't it be possible to connect they keyboard through MIDI cables to a Gameboy with a MIDI port added to it (like NeX has done)

And if this is possible, are there any tutorials or instructions on how to add the MIDI port to the Gameboy?

you don't need to build the midi stuff inside the gameboy itself. it's cool that people do it, but you can build an arduinoboy that's external much more easily. there's a great tutorial on building arduinoboys on instructables.com

also, search this board and the 8bc board because someone was just selling arduinoboy kits that included everything you'd need to build your own.

hey guys, let's do a cover album of just this song

i'm so fucking down for this, you have no idea. or maybe a keyboard cathy tribute, where we all do different songs of hers. i call "death by chocolate".

this show could not have gone better. thanks again danimal cannon!

if that doesn't work, could you open the rom in a hex editor and find the file name and then edit it there?

i did until very recently with my band.

this show is going to be so much fun.

If you don't like 1-bit music, I suppose thats fine, but that doesn't mean that they are devoid of art any more than bach's music for solo cello would be is you just didn't like the cello.

i don't know if this really pertains to the discussion, but i bet bach would LOVE one bit music. i was a music performance / history major for 2 years and i played a lot of bach cello and lute pieces. i think he'd love chip music in general, honestly.

it's not necessary but it's an easy mod to do and is a great introduction to the world of soldering and modding, if that's something you want to get into more.

One thing I like is being able to have a final product immediately after I finish writing.  Throw on some mastering and YAY RECORDING

this is huge for me. totally agree.

this started out as me trying to see what making a video using gameboy camera animation would be like but then it kind of turned out pretty cool. i took the pictures one day and edited the video the next. i'm excited to try this again now that i've worked all the kinks out of my process. a note about the song - it's from an upcoming album of mine where all the songs are named for characters from the west wing. here's some links if you want to download or buy the track.

my process (if anyone's interested) -
1. take the pictures
2. transfer sav to pc via bung xchanger
3. transfer sav to mac and use the sav to gif converter tool @ gieskes.nl
4. blow the pictures up 400%
5. edit the color palettes of some of them
6. use a picture editing program to make a bunch of animated gif's
7. convert animated gif to .mov with quicktime
8. import .mov files into iMovie
9. edit the film clips to match the song
10. done!

180 different pictures!
