I've always been big into electronic dance music and did a degree in music tech. I used to make techno mostly, and was heavily into the Leeds techno scene during my time at university there. Following, I graduated and moved to Japan for an adventure. During the first 3 years here I gave up music entirely and concentrated on getting proficient in the language. Once I got to a level where I was happy, I stopped studying and was looking for a hobby to pick up again, that's where music came in. I started making techno, and dubstep-style music (as dubstep was just blowing up around that time). A friend of mine introduced me to chiptune through the Gamewave Podcast, and I learnt about artists such as Quarta330, minikomi, ??? and eventually 8bc. It was then that I decided to go headfirst into the scene, so I got a gameboy and flashcart and started trying to emulate the dubstep sounds in LSDJ.

Since then, I met Lazerbeat, started Cheapbeats, and the rest is history I guess..! Been here ever since.

The chip scene has been one of the best things in my life and I'm grateful for all the adventures I've had so far, the cool people I've met, and the adventures still to come in the future.

heart

Nothing really bothers me about making chiptune... It's just for fun. If I lose my motivation, thats all good, I'll take a break and come back to it.

The relationship between chip and videogames is something that doesn't bother me either. True fans of the genre know that there isn't that much of a link, but it bothers me sometimes that chiptune is used as a label on VGM remixes. Cos clearly, that's incorrect af.

Another BIG release from Harley here. Mad club bangers are plentiful, all with intricate instrument design to leave you thinking "How the hell did he make that sound..?!"

Yeah man, I'm psyched, too. I've got my set pretty much sorted. It's going to be 50% stuff off the album and 50% new stuff. Haha, I've been sitting on that album for a while now. Glad it's finally out!

Something I really want to say to you:
I had picked up a copy of both Nanoloop 1 and 2 some time ago but barely touched them because LSDJ...I just feel alot more comfortable with and it makes sense to me. That said, I recently decided to start tinkering with the Gameboy Nanoloop, so I hit up YouTube and watched your tutorial vids. Basically, that Garage beat you did on this release, "Spank", my eyes got wide the moment you flipped to that on your video and I actually said to myself outloud "Holy cow this dude is dope as F***!" That seriously makes me want to try it all again. So thank you for that.

I'm sorry I didn't know about you sooner but your style of chiptune is awesome. I need to acquire this release on CD smile

So there it is. Thank you for the sick beats and the tutorial vids. I still honestly don't care for using Nanoloop but I just have to try again. The Advance SP is definitely a capable little machine smile See ya.

Wow, thanks for the feedback..! It's great to hear that I've been able to inspire others to put down LSDJ and pick up nanoloop for a change. Yes, it may have certain limitations, but its a solid sequencer that produces some amazing sounds.

The videos were a bit of an outlet for me as there hasn't been a decent nanoloop tutorial video on YouTube for a while now. The last ones I know of are from my good friend Lazerbeat who put up some videos back in 2009.. yikes
Glad they've been helpful to you smile

Thanks again,

Cheap

Hello world!

Thank you for checking my debut chiptune album (or actually double-EP) Space Tourism.

On tracks 1 to 4 I express my love for 80s synth pop, synth funk and space disco.

Tracks 4 to 8 (released previously as "My Amiga E.P") are an ode to the first music I ever loved: Commodore Amiga soundtracks and cracktros.
One of the tracks features vocals by my Turkish friend Nilipek (facebook.com/nilipekseveriz/), and the funky album art was made by my Greek friend Irini Pigaditi www.irinipigaditi.com

Thank you so much Cheapshot for adding me to the fantastic Cheapbeats catalogue.

Let me know how it feels!

Cheers,

Rutger

I feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to do this release with the amazing Cheapbeats team. Huge thanks to Cheapshot for taking care of everything, to Apples for bringing my envisioning of the cover art to life, to Breakbeat Heartbeat for the magic she added to this record, and also a huge thanks to everyone who supports me, everyone who enjoys my music. That really means a lot. I hope you guys might enjoy my new album as well, and if you even wanna buy it, that's super cool too. A great deal of feelings went into the making of this, and it was a lot of fun making it. I hope it shows.

Cheers!

Hey!

Just bumping this as I've been working on something to sync nanoloop 2 as master to the OP-1 as slave using Arduino and the Circuits@Home USB Host Shield.

Teenage Engineering's website seems to be wrong where they say the OP-1 will sync with MTC, the OP-1 will actually sync externally to MIDI Clock only (as far as I've seen in my tests anyway).

This means tempo syncing nanoloop 2 and the OP-1 becomes very straight forward, apart from one problem I'm running into - I can't get an Arduino to read nanoloop 2's MIDI clock output, the Serial.read() call just returns nothing from the link port when using littlescale's Arduino sketch, which works fine with other MIDI clock sources I've tested.

If anybody has any suggestions or information regarding how I'd get an Arduino to read nanoloop 2's MIDI clock output I'd very much appreciate it.

Cheers.

edit: it seems that nanoloop 2 doesn't respond to MIDI clock when in 'M' sync mode, maybe MIDI clock sync is currently broken?

Thanks for doing all this work Sam..! I hope you get some positive results soon so that the rest of us may benefit, too smile

I realise there is already a post from Mr. Spastic himself, but making this thread the "official Cheapbeats" thread for all upcoming releases (presuming I can edit the title each time there is a new release).

Special thanks to Cheapshot for all his hard work at Cheapbeats, LxTxCx for the great abstract artwork, aday and D-Strct for the distinct and expressive videos, and finally to Ultrasyd and Doomcloud for the super danceable remixes. The collaboration for this release was fun and inspiring with each individual who was involved.

A real wafflebomb of cuteness from Japan..! But that's not all. Oh no, there is some incredibly technical LSDJ programming going on under the surface here. And those melodies... try getting them out of your head after a few listens. Impossible!
