Wasn't some zelda dubstep remix comp one of bandcamp's top selling releases?

Selling covers is risky unless you're like a bar band. I doubt Nintendo would bat an eye, but who knows.

I'm talking about the hundreds of people selling Nintendo related plushes, posters, paintings, etc. around the world

What you were asking about in the original post was not legality, but why people are outraged by one thing and not another. That's what I was answering.

There is a part of me thinking Torres is a douche canoe for appropriating a song that wasn't his, even if he did send it to worldwide fame, but we can't have other people making money off of a pop tart cat, can we?

AFAIK he only owns the image - I don't think he was the one that created the meme and/or put the song on top

The Zelda stuff is up in the air. Literally hundreds of people make lots of money, hell even a living, by profitting off of selling video game appropriations at conventions and online. It's a legal concern that takes a far smarter person than me to understand

It's a shame that it didn't work out after that work but I really really respect you for doing the right thing by hitting up the maker and I'm sure they really appreciate it too. smile Please make some carts in the future though, why not with some of your own tunes!

So everyone here is cool with copyright infringement as long as it doesn't happen to one of their beloved chip music artists?

The difference is that the Nyancat song is so widely used it can be considered a part of the Internet's "cultural canon". It has gone so far that no one could police the use of the song, even if they wanted to.

idk, man!

In May 2013, Christopher Torres and Charles Schmidt, the creators of Nyan Cat and Keyboard Cat respectively, jointly sued 5th Cell and Warner Bros. for copyright infringement and trademark infringement over the appearance of these characters without permission in the Scribblenauts series of video games. Torres and Schmidt have registered copyrights on their characters and have pending trademark applications on the names.[25][26] Torres released a statement saying that he had tried to obtain compensation from 5th Cell and Warner Bros. for commercial use of the character, but was "disrespected and snubbed" multiple times.[27][28] The suit was settled in September 2013, with Torres and Schmidt being paid for the use of the characters.[29]

What's also interesting to note is that the image and the song are owned by two different people, but the meme was created by a third party joining the two together. So selling something like this could be even a multiple infringement I think?

dub DOES involve "dubbing" tho! - traditionally it was process of blending multiple reggae rhythm tracks together using strong EQ cuts and sending parts of the tracks to outboard effects with the aux sends. it was a way to perform using just a mixer and really opened a lot of doors towards performing modern electronic music smile I'm not an expert on this at all but it is super interesting reading to me IMO

requesting TSS drum covers of these youtube hymns!!!

Lots of care and attention went into this article and I think she did an awesome job! smile

My First LSDJ was a christmas cover for this compo that was curated on 8bc: http://rushcoil.bandcamp.com/track/the- … e-faithful  I couldn't decide which songs to cover so I put them both together lol

I was doing Nanoloop stuff for about a year before that one but I don't think anything was recorded sad

it works really well for schism tracker although going fullscreen proved too taxing, i guess the gpu is too weak. anyhow i wrote a couple of albums on it using schism tracker and since it is too slow to run anything else it's great 'cause there are no distractions!

this is actually a really cool idea to have a zero distractions schism tracker station!
