Okay, I've listened through like six times now, and I really really like this release. Nice work man! The only track I'm not massively keen on is the opener, purely based on the higher vox parts. They're a bit too 90s trance for me in places, but the music itself is great.

Really curious to see what you used to pull this together. smile

i think there's very little rebellion or anti-consumerism in the scene now, if there ever really was (individual artists in some cases, but never wide-spread from what i saw).. most of the scene has nothing at all to do with punk, at least from my perspective (that of someone who was in the punk scene for maybe 6-8 years starting in the mid-90s)

+1

I'm not really convinced there's anything 'punk' in chiptune. I don't even really understand what that's supposed to mean.

There may well be elements that were like the punk 'movement' in that there are scrappy musicians who pull together cheap electronics and subvert traditional electronic music, but there are also those who spend a shitload on gear and incorporate a C64 synth into their EDM. There's no single version of what chiptune is, and that's a good thing imho.

TBH, I think it boils down to the fact that people are always looking to ascribe labels to things to try and rationalise it in a way that they can relate to, rather than just accepting that it's a different phenomenon. It's no surprise that McLaren tried to posit chiptune as the 'new punk', because that's so integral to his own identity, but I think it does it a disservice.

I might be totally wrong on this of course, but personally I would never describe anything I do relating to chipmusic as punk.

Nice artwork! I'm not usually big into ambient music, but there are some great tracks in there. I especially like 'Deep Thought' and 'Perennial'.

What hardware did you use, out of interest? You've got some great warm sounds in there.

Yogi fired me over a zip of the PAL edition, which I've uploaded here if anybody else wants it:

In fact, I already had done one. Not sure why it didn't get released. I think I was having problems getting emulators to detect that it was a PAL ROM, my memory is a little vague on it.

Anyway, you can grab it here. There are two versions in the .ZIP file but I don't know why that is either! big_smile

Give it a try.

Looks like the Dropbox URL is dead. Does anybody have a copy of this that I could grab? smile I'll drop Neil a message too.

unexpectedbowtie, I wanted to quote your post but it would post once again the photos and I didn't wanted to flood here, however what I wanted to say is that, FU*K!! That looks just amazing! I'm even embarrassed now to post mine! you're lucky man!

Don't be! Simpler setups are often way better as you can focus on things, and plus... I am now severely in debt!

I got a bit carried away buying gear...

yeah, he's looking for best options for running a game boy through for live purposes.. i answered on facebook and told him that he'd likely be best off just running in through a laptop with ableton so he could use the exact same vsts and settings used in the recordings since most compact guitar pedals aren't ideal for his purposes since most of the cheaper and smaller ones tend to add noise to the signal... if he is 100% against using a laptop, i was going to recommend instead getting a 4U rack case and getting a decent alesis compressor or an rnc1773, a dual 15 band eq and either a rackmount reverb unit or a holy grail (though obviously this kills any portability and would run maybe $600-800 total)

Word, especially as most guitar pedals are mono, so you'd lose all of the stereo effects.

I use effects pedals a lot, but I am seriously struggling to understand what you're asking, sorry hmm

Are you looking for suggestions for the best effects to use on particular tracks/parts?

You don't need to have any detailed hardware experience, just try to explain a bit clearer so we can help with what you want to achieve.

Let's see!

Found this article posted on Bandcamp Daily, which has a mention for some of our pals - including Tobokegao, who I met in Japan just a few weeks ago:

Pretty cool!

Hiya!

Today I'm releasing my fifth full-length unexpected bowtie album, available digitally and on cassette tape via my homebrew label.

Blurb: "TOKYO is the latest album from Glaswegian electro-chip musician unexpected bowtie. Written while on long international plane and train journeys, this is music inspired by the lights and movement of globe-trotting; a lingering salute to the people that make up some of the greatest cities in the world.

This album was primarily written on a DMG-01 Game Boy, with a bunch of extra synthy goodness and guitars thrown in for good measure."

Digital downloads are £3, cassette tapes are £5, and streaming is freebz. It should be on Spotify at somepoint in the next few weeks if that's your thing.

You can stream/download/get the tape on my Bandcamp here: https://bowtie.bandcamp.com/album/tokyo

Here are some pictures of the tapes:

Hope you enjoy! I always like hearing your comments. smile

Nice work! Viking is probably my favourite track.

What software are you using on the C64, out of curiousity?

Great stuff man! Really like your sound.

Appreciate you offering the EP for free. I donated a tiny amount anyway so I could leave a message of support on Bandcamp though. smile
