Is there anyone in melbourne who wants to take a look at it?

Yeah I can take a look at it... I also have an LCD board with broken LCD, but the ribbon cable is good, so I might be able to replace it. Send me a PM.

Another theory: in replacing the audio socket, you did something to that little PCB on the left side... which is (I think) the DC converter board. Which might explain why you're getting the battery LED (it's powered directly by input power, 6V from batteries or AC adapter) but not the backlight (which is powered from 5V on the LCD board - I can even see the wires).

It should be reasonably easy to test if you're getting 5V supply to the CPU board and to the LCD board.

Perhaps try plugging in bud headphones to the socket (volume at max!) and listen for a click/hiss when you power on. If you hear nothing, then there's probably not even 5V being supplied to the CPU board at all, and the problem has nothing to do with the ribbon cable.

Maybe it's just the ribbon cable contacts, where it goes in the socket. Try reinserting it.
Also try turning it on while it is disassembled but with ribbon cable connected... use a piece of paper in between to prevent shorts. Just guessing it might be something to do with the mods, internal wires flexing the boards too much when all closed up.

If all else fails, let me have a look at it before chucking it in the bin wink

Do you mean internal Arduinoboy, or something else?

It's a shame you broke one of those left-handed DMGs... those things are ultra rare! wink

I checked those out, but I don't need 100' spools.  I couldn't find anything less.  They're also like $50 or more, which seems like they might be more for professional application.  I'm a hobbyist at best.

$50? Mouser part 602-3048-100-01, 100ft spool, $15.35.

On the topic of decals, you might want to consider this stuff: http://www.pulsarprofx.com/decalpro/
I haven't tried it yet, but I want to... it can do white labels, which would look awesome on dark coloured DMGs.

Isn't Mouser or Digikey a good option (assuming you're in the USA and shipping one spool would be cheap)?

like being slapped in the face with a fish. brutal. awesome.

12 months interest free repayment plans available. Conditions Apply*

* only available to Aussies with reputations I can trash if they don't repay wink

I probably should build it, but I have so many other projects in the queue wink

I paid US$470 for it, the "uC Hacker's Kit" with red LEDs and no Arduino. If I said I want AU$300 you'd tell me I'm dreaming. So PM an offer if you want.

The original Stribe (big PCB with 8 strips) was discontinued, and Josh then worked on this single strip design... it was one of the inspirations for the sammichSID case design, actually.

I still have the original Stribe, unbuilt. No one wants to take it off my hands sad

... or get something already using a SoftPot:
