OpenMPT is horrible to use and not really anything like the smooth workflow of FastTracker 2. If you're looking for a "modern version" then Milkytracker is your best bet. But tbh even that has some odd design choices that make it a second-best choice.
Yeah, manual is probably a good bet but the best way you'll learn is just loading in a bunch of XMs and looking at what they're doing. It also has a built-in help system with all commands and shortcuts (just click the Help button on the main screen) and you don't need much more than that.

and there's A.M.P which is sorted by artist but you have to download single files. (and if you're not on Amiga you need to rename them extension last) Anyway there is some stuff here you won't find elsewhere because Crown got in contact with people directly for unreleased tracks.
also scene.org might have some extra bits, I found a directory of Dune tracks I'd not heard before.
