Re: FM Synthesis video tutorials (80 replies, posted in Tutorials, Mods & How-To's)
Hi lazerbeat.
it was not pointed against you, i think you did a great job
it sounded like several had problems making good drums on the opl2/opl3 card.
and also that the it could not, or be difficult to make good drums on the opl2/op3.
there for i had to point out that the only reason, that i think why it is so hard, is because the software is laking.
and I also believe that the most important thing, to make good drums is a good pitch control, on any synth chip.
if you take a chip like the ay8910 or the ym2149, it can only produce a square wave but still you can make some real good drum sound, if you have a good pitch control.
i have just uploaded two more examples to show my point. (i know that the music is not great, this is what i meant with my music laking skill ) )
in this one i have use my bend routine to make a synth Scrat. this was made for fun, i uploaded to show that you can make some realy weird sound when changing the freq.
https://rapidshare.com/files/2770168477/Scrat_man.mp3
and this one, has a pretty heavy Bass drum.

Great Videos Lazerbeat, i love the way you use the notepad.
also good to see the hole video with sound
but there is something missing in the bass drum analysis
( it do not seem like i can get the uploaded picture to work .but you can see it here )
http://test.fedepede04.dk/#0.0
if you can see the picture i have uploaded, then you will see that the distance between A and B are differed, B are greater than A indicate that, B is a lower frequency then A, you need to have something like Tone bend it to obtain it.
but most Opl2 / Opl3 tracker don't have that function,
and that is the reason, why drums on the opl2/opl3, many times sounds a little flat.

shizcake wrote:could you explain in what way the modifier is modifying the carrier?
i mean from an analog synth's perspective, is the modifier basically a LFO in audio range patched to pitchYes, although there is the alternative of 'patching it' to phase, which has a very similar effect.
to the VCA
That would be AM (=Amplitude Modulation). AM effects actually sound somewhat similar to FM, but it's still distinctly different. Combine AM + FM ftw!
is it ringmodded
No, ringmods work differently. I have to confess I'm not exactly sure how (I think it's a type of AM?).
i the case of a FM-synthesizer you have 2 parts, the carrier and the modulations.
if you use AM-modulation on the carrier it will sound like tremolo fx, but if you use it on the modulations, it will change the Wave form.

Hi all
first i like to say that i don't do any music, i do not have the skill, i use to do a little, when i was testing my programs.
i think one of the reason the sound on a fm sound card, was so flat, was that the programmers, did not use many software filters, they only use the hardware fetures, if you programmed the opl2 / opl3 right you could get some really power full drums, i think the hard part was to make great sounding High hats.
here is a little sample that two of my friends did i my opl2/opl3 editor, i is sampled from a real ym724 chip
Btw the way the output is a little noisy, i had a hard time get the old card running again

Hi i have uploaded a new version
the main feature of the beta 12.01.
Unified frequent list, now there are the same space between all the notes,
so i does not matter, if you port and same time have and arpeggio, or one of the source is pitch one octave higher, now they keep in tune.
disadvantage, is you need to change some of the score (instrument vibrato list, FX Portamento rate)
New Function in Beta 12.01
Auto Portamento
Buzzer Vibrato
Buzzer Portamento
Unified frequent list
Turn Tone/Wave on-off in vibrato, bend and arpeggio.
Vibrato Depth
Invert Vibrato for synth wave.
this will properly be the last beta for a long time, except if i find some nasty bugs.
enjoy
Download it from here.
