I believe the contest is over, but there's nothing wrong with doing a cover of The Kinks because, well... because The Kinks.

I uploaded this to soundcloud so people can download it if they want.

Oh, whoops I guess I should have read the manual first.

I altered my original post as to not ask for votes.  Hopefully that makes it less grey.

I made this cover of "Picture Book" by The Kinks as part of a contest they are having at talenthouse.com.  This is a song I had actually been planning on covering anyway and then I heard about this contest so I finished it.  Below is a soundcloud link to listen and/or download and a link to the talenthouse page.  Enjoy!

Most of my close friends are pretty supportive and come to a lot of my shows.  My dad is really into it and actually gets what chipmusic is, although he does seem to think if I don't make money doing it then it's "just a hobby".  I used to get the "it sounds like mario" thing a lot when I first started, but since I've been doing it for a while, most people seem to appreciate it for what it is now.

I started performing chipmusic several years ago (2005-2006) and there was literally no scene happening in Boston.  This was also before I knew there was an online community, so maybe there were some people hiding and we just didn't meet each other.  But then all of the sudden it seemed like there were plenty of people making chipmusic in Boston and it keeps growing.  It might be that we were all there the whole time and just didn't know it.

This is a really cool idea.

It's hard to say what will feel retro in 10-20 years form now.  I'll always identify with the sounds of 80's hardware, but I feel like I'm too disconnected from the current generation to know what they might have nostalgia for when they get older.

To some extent this may have already happened with game systems like the first Playstation, which is close to 20 years old now.  I feel nostalgia for those games and that era, but I don't have any urge to make use of it's technology.

This is my first release in 4 years and my first release with Cathode Rays.  For those of you who don't know who we are, Cathode Rays is an 8-bit rock band from Boston, MA.  I write and record all the music but I play it live with a guitarist and drummer.  When we play live I use an SNES controller to play the melodies.

You can download it for free from mediafire, or if you think I deserve the money you can buy it from bandcamp.  Either way, I just want people to hear it.  There will be physical copies available at our shows.  We play around the Boston area fairly often and we are playing at Lit Lounge in New York on 12/9 and at 8static on 12/11.

Here are the links, enjoy:
