Real life harassment and online harassment are two very different things...
They are different, as different as slicing a banana with a knife and slicing a banana with a credit card. Did you know that online harassment happens in real life, not in an imaginary fictional world? Don't worry, it's pretty common for people to get confused on that point.
I have very fond memories of the time in 2012 when online streaming bedroom concerts were a thing. And the duck spiral.
What constitutes a historical chipmusic event?

Oh wait - back in the mid-90's when I wrote to Nintendo asking how to write NES music and receiving their official notice of legal action
that's so punk rock, dude

Re: University research. LSDJ on GameBoy hardware or LSDJ on PC emulation? (34 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
I find it a beautiful ironic quirk, and one of the things that makes LSDj awesome, that people would love composing music with just their thumbs so much, since most tonal musical instruments are designed to use all the other fingers in contrast
Thinking of responses to unexpectedbowtie's final question made me think of other reasons why I enjoy emulating LSDj, and why one might choose this over hardware.
› Show Spoiler
I guess my posting in this thread doesn't really serve much purpose to the OP since I haven't run LSDj on a Gameboy, but I figured it can't hurt to offer my unique perspective on it. I have no negative feelings towards running LSDj in an emulator, except for the fact that I can't run an LSDj+Linkport Keyboard setup on it.
Emulators mean you can't
Emulators mean you can practically use your thumbs, your fingertips, your feet, drumsticks, or whatever else you can think of that can send game control input to your computer.
Edit: Hardware is definitely the coolest thing, though. Can't beat that mojo. Especially if it's unmodded.

Re: University research. LSDJ on GameBoy hardware or LSDJ on PC emulation? (34 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
Everytime the topic of "LSDJ emulated on PC" comes up people start talking about "pc keyboard doesn't feel right" as if that's the only option.
Are USB game controllers really so rare that nobody even considers that they can use that instead of a keyboard? It makes a world of a difference. Even better, a NES controller-to-USB adapter, hehe. When I first purchased the LSDJ rom and loaded it up, it never even crossed my mind to use the keyboard with it, lol
As I haven't yet gotten around to running LSDJ on hardware, I can't say which I prefer. I do love emulating it on pc and being able to see it on a big screen. I've also grown to cherish the characteristic "overly clean and devoid of any semblance of hardware background hum" sound that BGB's emulation generates. And being able to export each channel as a separate file all in one go is nice. And the power. ALL THE POWER! Running vibrato commands simultaneously on 3 channels with no processor choke-up ftw. DMG can't do it, but purity be hanged if it lets me express the sounds that I want with the interface that I love
Plus, my computer's already always on and plugged in, and I never have to worry about batteries, or misplacing the gameboy, I can have all my sav files automagically backed up to various things instantly, easy access to kit modification, and also there are some fun hiccup glitches that can happen with emulation that I wish I could emulate on a DMG.
› Also, just a tip for a fairly intuitive pc keyboard setup for LSDj in the off chance that you may be forced to emulate it for the sake of actually creating in it:

Nah.

if you can use photoshop well enough that it actually looks identical to a goya painting, then i'd think most people would see both as being roughly equivalent, yes
and it would take far more than just one photoshop filter to come close to that, someone would likely have to make their own custom filter or know a lot about the way photoshop works to combine numerous existing filters, layering techniques, level and color adjustments, etc to get the end result...
but that's just me speaking as someone who has used photoshop professionally for over a decade
does someone using photoshop somehow reduce the value of whatever someone produces in your mind? that's weird
Nope, it doesn't, in and of itself. It depends more on /how/ they use Photoshop. If anything, I'd probably be more amazed at seeing someone reproduce Goya's brush strokes from scratch using Adobe Photoshop than I would be at seeing someone use paint and canvas to produce the same thing.

That's why GB games didn't do too much "smooth" waveform shifting.
Try using an old version of the BGB emulator. It dosen't have as much clickies i think. Or maybe that's just the LR output i'm tinking of

Re: How much do you guys enjoy chiptune? (56 replies, posted in General Discussion)
Maybe I'm projecting my own views and reception of all this stuff onto the other listeners. Maybe the things I said only apply to me.
stigma... mainstream producer...
I think that may be more related to the stigma attached to the mainstream music industry in general. And I doubt those producers would call what they put out "chipmusic". It's pop. If they don't call it that, why should we?
As for anam'n'guchi and etc.. who's to say some powerpunkers /didn't/ say such things? It's happened before in the past with other types of music. Look at nu metal. pop punk. Gospel music, even. They're all still a thing, and they're still developing, despite purists crying boohoo.
in the end, just do what you want. Dont let arbitrary labelers get you down. If you want to call it chipmusic, then do so. If not, don,t. It's more than an aesthetic. More than a methodology. It transcends those things. It doesn't have to be massively appealing to be chipmusic. It doesn't have to even be good...
Edit: to tho topic.. ive found myself not enjoying gameboy stuff as much as i used to. I must be getting old. My ears canbarely handle it ;-;

Re: How much do you guys enjoy chiptune? (56 replies, posted in General Discussion)
i think you missed my point.. what i was getting at is that its the results that matter, not the methods used so dwelling on if something is or isn't "pure chipmusic" is entirely irrelevant in that context
Ah, I gotcha. I guess it depends on what you mean by "results". If two guitarists, a banjo and three howler monkeys record a mix that sounds identical to a 4 channel ahx tune...
What I was kinda trying to say is that it's the end result that is usually being judged by "purists" first, and then knowledge about the method used to produce said result serves as validation for their opinions.
I guess I just don't see listeners dwelling on if it's "pure" or not as much as I see artists self-imposing those shackles onto themselves for whatever reason. Sure, a few listeners may mention it, or even ask about it, (in the same way a guitarist fan might want to know what pedals and amp and mics are being used on stage) but it's not like it's an obsessive end-all be-all fixation on purity that they're imposing on the artists, at least as far as I know.
I don't think it's possible to seperate end result from method in most art., unfortunately. Is running a photograph through a photoshop oil paint filter comparable to a Goya if it looks nearly identical to something he would have painted?
Imo, if the artist says it's chipmusic that's good enough for me. Pure or not, chipmusic is chipmusic.
