I think I've made a rather silly mistake somewhere along the line on this GB I've been modding.

The backlight (A V4 from Nonefinite) has an odd checkerboard on it. I'm assuming this is due to something stupid I've done like putting it in upside down or putting the film on incorrectly.

Anyone know what this is before I get back in there and try messing with stuff?

Just finished messing around with it. After a bit of rejigging and tightening I finally got it together. Theres a tiny bit of pressure on the screen, that you can see in the bottom corner when the gameboy is off but seems ok... for now. Might open it up again and give it a tiny bit of a loosen in certain parts.

Also managed to get the speaker working again too!

I'm pretty happy it's finally done. Ran into SOOOO many problems along the way. I might post some pictures later. But thanks for everyones help! I really do appreciate it. heart

Ok here are the two sides. The front side is currently partially screwed in. But obviously when I tried to close the case it was all screwed down.

I believe the problem is that the backlight is raising the screen just a little to much. I screw down the fron PCB very carefully to avoid pressure that might crack the screen or the PCB itself now that its got the backlight in there. Should I continue to screw the PCB down, and try and get it tighter? Or is there something else you can see there thats causing it not to shut?

The backlight might not be seated properly. Just don't force it shut, it should close comfortably. Without more pictures, it's difficult to say.

The backlight is in as best it can be. The right side is slightly raised, but I have been told this is normal for nonefinites backlights. It doesnt stick out by a huge amount. I'll get a pic of the inside of the front now as well.

YEESSSS! ITS DONE.

I've had so much help on these forums and I thank you all for it.

I've hit one last snag however. The damn case wont close now!

The backlight works great and by the looks of it, I've not broken any connections on the LCD (Which was my big worry). However after testing and screwing everything back up the case won't shut.

Here's a piccy (though slightly out of focus, sorry sad ):

ALSO I resoldered the disconnected speaker back on and it's not working. It looks like when the speaker came off it took some of the metal on the PCB with it. Around the hole itself it seems like theres no metal track left and it just burns as I solder to it. I've tried dragging solder right back onto where the track isnt destroyed but to no avail. Is there anything I can do to repair this also?

CartooN: Sorry Nitro. You fixed my post last time as well. I'm just not used to that rule. I'll remember next time big_smile

Awesome, thanks for the help! The last thing I have to do is solder the speaker back on, as it was broken off on this DMG. Is there a way to tell which way is positive and negative?

Huraaay, its in. But the LCD is raised a little more than it was before. Is this normal?

Awww you did me a picture and everything heart

xD. Sounds like a plan, it shouldnt be too much to remove it. My only fear is that that particular bit of the frame is right under the lower ribbon cable. Is there a good tactic for getting under there with clippers safely?

Hello its me again xD.

I FINALLY managed to get the film off the back of my DMG's LCD. Took a lot of effort but the thing finally came free. So thanks for the help.

I've run into another snag though, and maybe you guys could help me out again. I bought one of nonfinite's new version 3 ultra backlights. The problem I've got is that when I insert it into the frame the backlight wont slot in as its supposed to. The reason for this is that the wires that come off of the backlight dont bend and are too tight to the backlights side. At first I thought maybe this was because I had put it in the wrong way round but even inserting it the other way yields the same problem. Here's a picture:

The V3s are meant to just slot straight in with no cutting. As the tutorial video shows (At 2:55): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmE3ztwCvcg

I cant understand what Im doing wrong with this one. Any ideas? sad

Siiigghhh I know this is getting rediculous but.

Im about half way through getting this layer off. It still seems overly difficult. Its so hard to pull off and ive been trying with a blade for ages.

Im starting to think that there is maybe ANOTHER layer under this one that its split from. When I look through the clear part of the screen and turn it, it changes what I see through it to different colours. Is this normal? Or is there ANOTHER layer of film on the screen thats causing this?

Im having trouble seeing where the layer actually is. Im using a razor blade but Im worried Im chipping away at the side of the LCD rather than the layer itself.

EDIT:

So I've managed to get under the layer and its coming off. Very slowly, its split and frayed at the top and its prooving extremely difficult to remove, but it is coming. Just slowly ¬_¬.

EDIT EDIT:

Im having more trouble. Sorry guys T_T.

Now Ive got about 1/2 or 1/4 of the way through the film, it wont peel. It leaves a hell of a lot of glue behind when it peals and often breaks into bits when I pull it. I cant put the force I need into getting it off without doing damage to the rest of the dmg. What should I do? Im trying to pry it off with a razor but to no avail.

Saskrotch wrote:

uh you guys?

the silver layer is stuck onto the layer you actually peel off.

Thankyou, this is what I thought. But I cant seem to get at that layer. sad

Mines REALLY gluey and smudgey over the screen though. Never had this problem before, always just come off in one and not left anything behind.

EDIT: Im just looking at it again, the screen is clear but green and still very smudgy.

So Im trying to get the film off from under the screen of this DMG. The top layer seems to come off fine, but the silver layer just keeps flaking away. I cant get enough up to pull it off without it just falling to pieces.

Im a bit confused, is there a layer under this layer that I should be removing as well? Or do I just have a problem? Its making a right mess of the screen too, it looks all smudgy sad.

nitro2k01: I made the title descriptive, as per rule 12.

I suppose my next question is why. Surely its possible to replace the battery sram with something more modern?

Hmmm interesting, but disheartening sad.

For games like Teris that save high scores, will that also overwrite the save?

Hi guys, I'm pretty new to the chiptune scene. I'm perhaps more interested in the modding itself, I've bought a couple of DMGs (I dont want to mod my first DMG, too sentimental big_smile ) and I've been adding LEDs, backlights and prosound to them. Its been pretty fun.

Anyway, I have a question about USB carts. I've noticed that most of the carts say that save files save to SRAM and only one save can be stored at a time.

I'm unsure as to what this means exactly. If I was to put multiple games, mods, programs etc on the cart, does that mean that only one of them can have save data?

Thanks for any help smile
