They've been hidden to cut down on clutter. They're visible on profile pages, though.
View New POsts Since Last Visit?
Clicking "Recent Posts" up there will do that. Then click "New Posts" (in blue) in the thread title. That'll bring you to the newest post since your last visit.
- private messaging (maybe)?
The "PM" beneath the avatars is the link to private message a user.

Also, arlen, just as a test, are you able to see all of the different grays in the following image? Twenty-one distinct squares from black to white on top level and in reverse at the bottom.
If not, the darkness of this thread may stem from an uncalibrated monitor.
