gameboy musicians complaining about writing music on an 11 inch screen? smile

i used a netbook with an 11 inch screen, no numpad and a 1st gen atom cpu as my main computer for about 3 years... it is remarkable how quickly you get used to whatever you actually have - just think, people used bbc micros and apple 2s with no complaints, once upon a time! as long as you don't constantly compare it to other people's computers you'll find that it's not too much of a problem, i think

*shrug* that's true i guess

djhaka, maybe get some computer programs to write music for you - algorithmic/computer generated music is a lot of fun and you might get more out of doing something creative like that for yourself than doing things for other people? smile unless you are exceptionally generous

speaking of dream lgpt features i would like to see a more normal tracker keyboard input scheme for PC (q = c, 2 = c#, w = d etc) - i know it is designed for handheld devices but it has a lot of unique features and a fun workflow and it would make a good pc tracker

sounded like fm to me haha *shrug*

some thoughts about this

- not totally incompetent
- some interesting musical ideas
- proper sick beats innit
- beyond the intro no part of the song DOESN'T have "proper sick beats" over it
- it is a bit messy / sloppy
- structure is complex and difficult to follow
- the instruments are fairly plain/unembellished

a lot of people's early chiptunes are like this for whatever reason, there are a lot of sounds doing a lot of things in ways that are kind of hard to follow. you can even hear it in early zan-zan-zawa-veia wink but as people gain more experience it seems like they find ways to make stuff sound "tighter". i don't have a good definition for what "tighter" means but i think with practise you can get the sounds to cooperate with each other a bit better

don't be too disheartened by this please i am trying to be critical which i am not very good at usually

1) supposedly louder sounds better with all other things being equal which is what has precipitated the so called loudness war (wikipedia it!). also people want to crank sh*t up in the car while on the motorway or whatever which is why top40 chart pop gets the brickwall limiter treatment. i'm sure you know this already though and are just asking for people to turn it down a bit. which is fine smile maybe they should. personally i am not sure why chip people are so big on mastering stuff at all when all the music sounds just fine (or just bad) without it / played straight from the tracker. secretly i think like a lot of things we as chipsceners do it is to legitimize our stuff as "real music"

i have no real evidence for that but i know a lot of people are trying to distance what they do from videogames / 1990s finnish teenage nerd culture and maybe the "recording all the tracks separately into logic and then using plugins that you have to pay for to make them louder and more bassy" is a step on that path along with the having it put on vinyls and selling it for real money aspect

that is probably a bit cynical. the technical aspect of music production is quite enthralling and i bet some people just find it addictive or maybe even theraputic to do something clinical and scientific like that at the end of the artistic process. personally i'm crap at it which explains both why i don't do it and why i'm bitter about people who do

2) probably they are doing copy paste Compo Echo and are too lazy to fix it or maybe they just don't care? recently i like to use a fine pitch bend to separate out notes like that because skronky detune has always been lovely to me but the delay tip seems good too. mostly i just don't do compo echo, it's a cheap trick and not particularly artistic imo, although i am sure you can find loads of my songs where i've done it and probably even done the thing you complain about

This week ex-TWG patriot aviel sent us two tracks just in time for summer // post-420 hazes, and they're as beautiful as anyone familiar with his work has come to expect; sampled R&B twinged piggy tracks which whilst seemingly simple at first, pulse with emotion.
