Yo.

This is a rock (I guess) track I did in VGM MM.

I'd like to know if it was enjoyable to listen to and I'd like some suggestions on what I could of improved. Any other comments are welcome.

I like this idea. I feel like I should probably do one of my own. Seems interesting.

edit:

I've never played the first Megaman and thought something totally different was going on.

I thought you made new music to fit the game.

Still cool though.

Just started the download.

Thanks.

I recently wiped my hard drive and I need the instruments for VGM Music Maker. The only problem is when I tried getting the TFI files I got a 404. Apparently the rar isn't there anymore. Does anyone have the TFI files?

That's where I would have gotten them.

Yes VOPM is a totally different chip with more built in LFO and a better DAC system (not include in the chip) missing certain features of YM2612
As I always said when ask:
If you want a tracker >> Deflemask
If you want a VST >> FMDrive
If you do not know about FMDrive there is a thread in the SEGA forum.
Legendary Genesis composer of Bare Knucle (Street of Rage) Yuzo Koshiro himself uses it when needed a Vst and He damn knows well how a YM2612 should sound smile
The advantage are:
-Easy programming tricks, more than 100 parameters MIDI automatable + built in additional software LFOs (witch you have to program on the real system)
- A global rate multiplier/divider for the envelope registers
-Accurate emulation of the typical "Ladder effect" (distortion of the DAC on the Model 1 Genesis)
-CSM mode (early speech synthesis system built in the YM2612)
-Easy programming of CH3 special mode (different frequencies per operator)
-DAC tricks like waveform programming in real time.
-Import and Export .tfi
-etc

if you want to go further you can optionally switch to HD mode witch make the all FM processing High resolution and up to 96Khz pushing the aliasing limit higher then YM2612...

The FMDrive also work with the GenMDM system witch let you control the Genesis in realtime via MIDI.
The PSG is not supported by FMDrive because and entirely Vsti will be used only for it, included HBlank Timer tricks...
Here is what you can do with a Genesis...

Thanks.

Is the thing plugged in the Genesis the same as the one Little Scale uses? Are those for sale from him yet? Or can I buy them elsewhere?

VOPM is YM2151. No comparsion to YM2612 + SN76489.

I almost forgot about DefleMask. I don't think I could get it to work though. Is it just about the same as VGM Music Maker in terms of Genesis music?

~~in terms of authenticity~~  vgmmm is "more authentic" for sure. you can play back songs you made in that on a real mega drive which you cant do with vopm. and it will force you to stay within mega drive limits. where as if you use vopm you can make songs with a billion channels and reverb.

but authenticity isnt the be all and end all of music so choose

whatever you feel more comfortable with.

That's what I was thinking. I could just save all my channels in VGM Music Maker separately and add my effects in FL that way. I'm pretty sure the reverb is what spiced those tracks on Youtube up.

Thanks to you and everyone else for their input.

In terms of authenticity, which one should I use? I've been familiar with FL for the longest time but I'm getting comfortable with VGM Music Maker as well. But I think I could probably do better work in FL. Will VOPM still produce authentic Genesis tracks for me? I've listened to VOPM tracks on Youtube and the quality is really nice.

what have you written so far?! It's tough to give amy recommendation beyond "keep going" until I know what you sound like~

This goes to everyone but I quoted you because you asked to hear something I've made.

I'm working on something right now that I started after using some of the advice given to me in this thread.

I see that I'm able to upload music on here. I'll upload it and link it in this thread so you can all give me your input.

Thanks for all the input.

I've noticed some of you mentioned things that I have already gone through as well. It makes me feel better now knowing that it's not because I lack any musical ability. Some of you mentioned to play an instrument. I do play guitar but I need some new strings for it. I've done most of my work in FL Studio. What I've mostly done is experiment and make sample based hip-hop. Not to long ago I found VGM Music Maker on these forums. Making sample based hip-hop was fun but I really want to compose my own music now. I was off of VGM Music Maker and music in general for about a month or two until I got my copy of Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles. I've played the game before but never realized how bad ass the music was. What got me into making sample based hip-hop was artists like Nujabes. He uses jazz samples and Sonic3/Sonic & Knuckles has some songs that sound jazzy. So I guess what it all comes down to is that I want to make something jazzy as well. I guess it's just going to take a lot more practice and research. I thought after 6 years I could churn out something great. It seems like a long time but maybe it's actually just the beginning.

Yo.

I'm new here and I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this thread. Move it if required.

On topic:

I know this is the most asinine thing someone could ask but how the hell do I make music? I've been trying almost everyday since 2007.... How is it done? I've made some songs but they were all trash to me. I just don't get how someone could sit down and make something like Hydrocity Zone. When I sit down and try to make a song I'm just sitting there stressed out for hours trying to figure everything out. At this point my heads starting to hurt from the redundancy of failure. Where do these songs even begin? What's the start? Where do I start? When I do come up with something I hate it. I just want to enjoy making music free of all stress. I want something to enjoy listening to after working on a project.

I know this most likely just comes off as complaining/ranting but I'm really out of ideas here.

All advice is appreciated.
