I/O Chip Music NYC

Sunday, Nov 7th, 2010

Neil Voss
---------------------------------------------------------------

Seminal and elusive electronic music artist, Voss emerged from the late 80's underground computer scene to produce some of his generation's most highly regarded video game soundtracks, alongside scores for tv and film. Notably, in the early part of his career Voss produced the soundtrack to the Nintendo64 sleeper Tetrisphere, which many regard as some of the best work of its time. Pushing synthesizers, samples, computers and chips together without prejudice, Voss' music has been described as dark, melodic electronics that defy convention or expectation.

The Shortsleeves
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Paul Owens (Go Motion) plays the gameboy and Jenn de la Vega (Drum Machine Dating Service) plays Casios. They hope you dance. Or smile. Or have lunch with them at Chevy's.

exileFaker
----------------------------------------------------------------------

exileFaker (Alex Kiefer) composes electronic music using the same gray matter he used to play Tetris as a teenager:  a DMG-01 and a standard lateralized human brain. He has since expanded his repertoire to include two Game Boys (but retains just the one brain). His music is influenced in ways he barely understands by the people, places and events he has experienced.

Equal parts whimsy and razor-sharp songcraft, Kris Keyser's "Staring Into Squares" is a collection of dreamy, echo-y arpeggios and satisfyingly dense chord progressions. An ingenious mix of sound effects as punctuation in "So I Slept In" and "Radio Necrosis" blast you into the ionosphere, keeping that fist pumping and head bobbing until the morose melodies of "Rockem Sockem" bring you back down to tierra firma.

Br1ght Pr1mate
Boston, MA

Former Boston rock scene alums Lydia Marsala and James Therrien (Fugitive Kind), combine forces for a new take on live electronic music. Using a unique blend of live vocals, acoustic instruments, gameboys and vintage electronics, Br1ght Pr1mate explores, bends and completely ignores the boundaries of Chiptune, Pop, Art, Electro, Rock, Jazz and Soul for a futuristic fusion that would be right at home on your favorite space ship. Br1ght Pr1mate's music has been featured on FOX News National Morning Show "Fox & Friends", and has received praise from The Boston Globe and most recently, The Boston Phoenix.

Active Knowledge
Boston, MA

"It's not so much the preservation of youth, as the celebration of it," says Chris Mahoney, better known in creative circles as Active Knowledge. Firing notes through an original Nintendo Entertainment System, the Active Knowledge mixes vintage video game sounds with synchronized glitchy, spastic visuals. The idea is unadulterated fun, with a focus on the unadult. Active Knowledge’s debut album “Pyramid Neon” is available to download for free on his site.

Disasterpeace
Boston, MA

Travel through deep forbidden forests and the far reaches of space! Disasterpeace is a curious form of chipmusic that blends progressive rock, minimalist, jazz, and dance tendencies with an aesthetic sensibility that pays homage to the sounds of the past yet that is largely synthesized from the ground up... He’s kind of a big deal, too:
