Shameless self plug of an attempt at ambient C64 stuff

// All prices are in AUD, shipping is from Melbourne, Australia //

Regretfully looking to sell a bunch of gear that I don't get to use much anymore, thought someone here might be interested in some of it! Let me know if you have any questions/are interested in anything. Will consider trades if people want to do that.

Atari 1040STe with SM146 monochrome monitor - $400
Not only a chiptune machine but the tightest MIDI computer ever!
Pretty much in brand new condition, still with boxes. Comes with 4mb expansion RAM that hasn't been installed (needs to be soldered), an AV adapter cable, Mouse, and a heap of floppy disks (haven't counted but I think about 30ish) with programs on them (most unopened!).

USB-boy - $80
Nice compact arduinoboy from Thursday Customs. Been used about twice and in very good condition. Comes with USB cable.

Akai S3000xl - open to offers
Brilliant rack sampler, classic Akai sound.
Condition isn't great, new backlight, but the backlight inverter only works very occasionally, 8 outputs don't work. But otherwise fully functional! 110V, needs stepdown transformer. Comes with floppy disks (with some arguably nice samples and programs on them).
Upside: You can probably grab it for pretty cheap.

i disagree whole-heartedly.. i managed to get darker sounds out of lsdj, all versions of nanoloop, midines, piggy tracker & sammichsid among other hardware and software... it might not be super easy, but if you're only doing what's easy then why do it at all? all versions of nanoloop excel at being able to change things drastically live, and using live mode in lsdj or piggy tracker is easy and opens up lots of possibilities.. additionally one can use external effect units, guitar pedals, additional instruments, etc...

I specifically avoided including nanoloop, piggy tracker, and midines in that because they are all excellent tools for that sort of music, however, they're nowhere near as accessible to people as a DMG and LSDJ.

As for the rest, I completely agree with you that it's possible, I've done so myself, but as you said it is a lot harder. And again, in response to if you're only doing what's easy then why do it? A lot of people wouldn't think that way unfortunately. It's people's natural tendency to do what they can already do well. That and a lot of people don't have a drive to make minimal tech in the first place.

I'm not saying any of this is true for everyone, I'm just saying it seems to be a strong trend I've noticed.

pselodux wrote:

Yeah, true. Hopefully nanoloop mono will bring some welcome softer sounds into the chip scene big_smile

Yeah, hopefully! Even so, I'm going to try and get some of that softer side out from things like the C64 soonish I hope. And was literally just playing around with deflemask, and the MegaDrive is ripe for some tech stuff!

maaan, if only. After the exhausting effort of organising a monthly electronic night last year, I don't think I want to do it again any time soon, unless I can co-organise with someone. Even so, the anxiety I get from promoting a show stops me from putting together a set, or rehearsing enough..

Ahh, yeah that's fair enough! Tbh after I don't have to organise events for uni (i.e. next year) I'd be down to co-organise an event! But yeah, promoting is rough hmm

pselodux wrote:

Given, they are meant to be a party atmosphere, but where are my god damn dark brooding monochrome minimal tech chip shows?!

Tbh I think the problem is that most chip platforms can't really get that softer/darker sound, or that live variation in timbre required. For example, LSDJ, NES, etc. isn't ideal because it's all sharp pulsewaves, and you can't really edit the sounds drastically in live performance. There are platforms that do work well, such as Commodore 64s, GBA with nanoloop (as you've proved wink ) and probably things like the Megadrive. But these platforms are harder to get a hold of and use, so, less people use them, and those that get into those consoles usually make the styles that the consoles are known for (classic demosceney stuff for C64 etc.)

That said, start a minimal tech chip show! I'd be keen to try and get a project together for one!!

Hey there little chiller, I'm 32 years old. And I still make chiptunes. All you young whipper snappers ain't got nothin'!...

LOL Just kidding!

Actually, every-time I go on SoundCloud, some artist out there ends up humbling me with their superior skills. Sometimes I lack confidence, other times, I don't care, and just simply enjoy bringing to life the music that's in my head.

I always try to acknowledge other people's strengths, while also giving them constructive advice on how they can get better (if necessary). I am a Christian though, so that contributes to me striving to be more humble in my approach to music and people... although, I still have a long way to go, and much self to die to.

[Romans 12:3 - For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one.]

I believe this website is an outlet for lots of talented chiptune artists... many with skill that far surpasses my own in terms of music and motivation.

I will clarify, that was a sarcastic comment, I'm definitely not anywhere near the older age of the scene, but I'm also not the youngest, and I don't think I'm conceited. I thought I should also add that I am one of those people who dances around on stage and enjoy my music a lot, and personally, I don't really care what other people think of my music when I play, but I don't believe that people have to enjoy my music, and I don't mind if they don't. Also, someone can enjoy their own music without thinking it's good. I enjoy my music but I listen to other artists who blow my mind and accept that I'm nowhere near that level, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy. Everyone has to enjoy their own music, otherwise they wouldn't be able to know what sounds good and what doesn't. If you don't enjoy your music, what's the point? I also dance around a lot and hype things up because if I'm dancing like a fool, others are more inclined to join in.

That said, I am always open to criticism and other peoples thoughts. I may not necessarily take all of them on board, as everything is personal taste, but I will listen. Also, if asked I will give constructive criticism, but again, specify that it's all personal taste, and just suggest things that could work well with their idea, and never suggest anything that would take away from their own ideas.

Anyway... </2cents>

Being 19, it's safe to say I'm probably one of the oldest and most conceited members in the chiptune community. Others try to be as conceited as me, but I pull it off way better.

Yeah I was going to say that sounds a lot like a 1040STF! And yeah it might make a monitor situation a tad more complicated, but sound-wise they're the same, and the extra RAM is definitely a nice feature to have!

Disc problems - people have reported disc problems. Quite often they come from using a 2Mb version of maxYMiser on 1MB machine for example. might be worth double checking

Ah okay, I will double check that then. I have been using Steem a lot more recently and haven't encountered the problem since, so I think it might be my Atari. But thanks!

Haha yeah I know it's super annoying when it happens to others. I'm always like "you found a tb303 in the trash? how about fucking right off?"

Yeah, synthtopia posted about some guy finding a korg ms20 in a dumpster and I was like nope... no way.

Now, from my brief experience with the Atari, ages ago, I seem to remember being unable to run most music software in hires mode. Am I correct?

You can run most of the MIDI sequencing software like Cubase, Creator and Notator, but the fun stuff like MaxYMiser and Protracker don't work in the hi-res mode (which is sad because I only have a hi-res monitor and I have to use a 4" reversing camera monitor for colour, but it's worth it for MaxYMiser).

I still can't get over finds like this... how do people just stumble across things and why can't this happen to me?!

n00bstar wrote:

Unfortunately the guy who threw it out didn't include a monitor, or mouse, or any software so I'm kind of stuck.

Damn, how inconsiderate of that guy wink haha

In terms of monitors, as it's an FM it should have an RF modulator built in, so it will work with any TV that has an RF in, although you have to buy an adapter from RCA to RF which is like a dollar at your nearest electronics store. You should be able to buy a mouse off ebay? Or maybe even a PS/2 adapter!

As for software, there's some good information here to get software onto the thing. In terms of software to use, there is MaxYMiser, which is very in depth and great although a little intimidating at first, and there is also MusicMon which is a lot simpler to use, but has a few limitations.

Best of luck with your Atari adventures!!

It might have happened if you updated the rom to the arduinoboy rom as well, sometimes that will make it different.
Either way, hopefully that will be the problem and then its an easy fix!

There are options in the project menu in LSDJ that control the sensitivity of the cursor, under key delay and repeat. Mine is at 7/2, which is what I'm used to, but try playing around with those.
