I recently started a "4 chains+" a day tactic and so far it's working very well! Keeps me busy and working!

hey, i have a tattoo of a dmg, but still prefer the sound from a gba sp for most of my stuff... and im not alone, low-gain usually used sp's same with bubblyfish.. plus for those using lsdj, the extra processor power is very useful.. ive written a few tracks in lsdj that cause the dmg to become unresponsive

I guess that should be something else to consider, processor power. Is there a huge difference in what can be done between a original game boy and a game boy advance? Do the songs play smoother or is the interface easier to use? And since lsdj using the sound from the system, are there more available on the advance handhelds?

Again, sorry for all the questions. Just want to making sure I am doing this right.

Both are good options, whichever you prefer.

GBA takes 2xAA while DMG takes 4xAA
GBA < DMG when it comes to sound quality ( http://www.herbertweixelbaum.com/comparison.htm )
GBA/SP is smaller
Both don't come with a backlight (with the exception of the GBASP)
GBASP needs a rare-ish adapter for audio out and and even more rare adapter for charging/link AND audio out.
Link cables are different but you can find hybrids that have both types of inputs

Those are some of the things I remember/can think of (correct me if I'm wrong please!)

e.s.c. wrote:

oh, a GBA SP might also suit you well.. they sound a little harsher in general, but some eq and post-production work can take care of that if its not to your liking... plus their backlit screens are very nice and crisp.. only hassle is getting one of the headphone adapters, but they shouldnt be too hard to find (seems like their were more than enough made, at one point i had over a dozen and would just give them out semi-randomly to people who didn't have at least two already)

DMG-01 FOR LYFE!!!!

Best sound quality (minus having to do noise reduction after recording, which you won't be escaping regardless what model you get)

Hey all!

Soooo idk if this counts as spam (if so mods please remove) but there's a lot of chip artists working on this project IF it gets funded, and an arsenal of artists like this working on 4 GORRAM ALBUMS sounds pretty freaking awesome to me!!!!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/im … tarr-mazer

If you have money to chip in do it do it do it because I really want to see this game (and the remixes) happen. They have 11k USD to go in under 4 days so support if you can!

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn't have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You've just gotta fight your way through.”

Dont mod anything starting out (you can take hiss out of recordings with audacity really easily)... get an ems cart from kitsch bent, donate some $'s to lsdj, get some rechargable aa, and get to work. i cant wait to hear some of your tunes. your atomic purple gbc will be a good tool.

i also totally agree with this statement... mods are not necessary by any means, especially if you take a little time learning the in and outs of audacity and/or your daw of choice... noise reduction done properly in software is way better than what just recording with a prosund modded game boy can do... hell, even with prosound modded game boys, i still run 1-2 passes of noise reduction on any game boy recordings

Also, it's better to just use a GBC or something inexpensive to start out so that if you truly don't like LSDJ, Nanoloop, or whatever it is you might be using, then you can just forget about it without regretting a huge investment.

LSDJ is a separate tracker from Famitracker so you don't need LSDJ if you're going that route.

LSDJ is something I would totally recommend. People usually (from what I've seen) get turned off by the controls but once you get used to it it's really fun to work with

I personally don't know of any z80 trackers though, and you can't produce z80 sounds from Fami and LSDJ. Famitracker uses chips like VRC6 and LSDJ uses the GB soundchip.

vr6 is just one of the expansion NES chips.. in most cases, (ie original music on NES carts besides the ones with expansion chips built into the carts) all of the sound comes from the 2a03

Ah ok. I thought they were 2 completely different things haha tongue

Guess ya' learn something new everyday tongue

Also new to the EMS cart and already have one ordered from kitsch. Will I be able to load LSDJ itself from the Android app?

It only reads/writes SRAM so you can't change the ROM.

I hear 2xAA is working on a kickass app for Mac though! Should make syncing things very easy.

My biggest suggestion is to get your hands dirty in a tracker that's free I.e.: famitracker, deflemask

Another thing that helped me exponentially was going to shows around the area. That's how I met most of the guys that jazzmarazz mentioned. You'll end up having a ton of conversations about music and certain techniques for tracking.

Thank you for the response! I scanned over the websites and they seem interesting enough for me to full around with. If I were to use them, do I still need lsdj? I know I'll need it for my gameboy, but could I just use z80 sounds from those programs directly?

I would love to go to shows too! But are there any going on around the Michigan region?

yo if your getting an ems be sure to check this out http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/15904 … 64m-carts/

I haven't gotten the chance to use that app yet because I don't have an adapter for my phone yet tongue

It looks really handy though in case you're on the road and forgot to save something to the cart/need to back something up ASAP!

Hey there! There are a ton of us scattered around. You should get into contact with Garrett(a.k.a. Stardriver/dolphin) for getting some mods done to your current gameboy(s).

^^ Def get mods from him, he's making a kickass GB for me now and repaired my others fast ^^

Thanks a lot!

It seems like GB Ems USB 64M is the most popular one. Any recommendations? Is it up to date?

Try and get a Drag N' Derp if you can because it's $100 tongue

EMS is the most popular (and in my opinion) best option for the money.

It can be used with a Mac, but you have to use terminal commands and so on to get it to work.
Windows drivers are really frustrating to install to the point where I've given up on them tongue

Drag n' Derp > EMS for performance
Drag n' Derp < EMS for price

Damn that's an awesome setup! I really want to get something like this but more portable. I'm nowhere near a 3D printer so I really gotta figure some stuff out in terms of casing and power supply.
