Haha, thanks guys! I appreciate the CC, it's all really helpful. I'll revisit it and tweak it a bit with this after I have a few more tracks ready to go. The other day I was about 90% finished with my second track, and I accidentally loaded it when I meant to save it, losing 80% of the song (worst feeling ever).

As for the sound design:
@Adil: The kick is just a sine wav kick w/ some added compression and EQ on the whole wav channel.
The main bass-line was a bunch of different KIT instruments running the "Kung-Fu" samples at different loop speeds, which made different pitches and gave it a weird texture.

Just loaded up Renoise for the first time in years and started my track "Manilla Folder."

What am I doing with my life?

I do this all the time, but I make lots of different kinds of music. I like to share my stuff online with friends to get opinions ("This pretty is cool!" or "It sounds like it's missing something."), so throwaways are good for that. It's not like I have a following or anything. I used to DJ house parties for fun, and people would chant my embarrassing DJ name sometimes when they were super trashed. Don't pick corny names when you play out, and don't use turntables at houses with shitty wood trampoline floors and people who like to dance.

Coming up with a moniker is great, it's like getting a shitty drunk prison tat that you can scratch off later!
I also vaguely enjoy the challenge of finding a good unused vanity URL.

Here's my first demo of my first (sorry) track done exclusively on one Gameboy running LSDj. I mixed it down and added some compression, EQ, panning, and a touch of reverb in my computer. This kind of thing is pretty much the complete opposite of any music I've ever made. I normally make boring hi-fi ambient trash that's more focused on texture, space, and field recording than anything. With chipmusic, I'm trying to make light-hearted teeth-gnashing dance tunes (with the intent of playing live one day), this forces me to focus on melody and structure instead. Anyway, I'd appreciate some CC on whether the track is too monotonous, and maybe some pointers on how to liven it up a little without making it too busy or distracting. General feedback is welcome too. It's not mastered or anything, so crank it up loud!

Does DMG-01 = CPU-01? If so, I have one.

Edit: Oop, figured it out, I've got a CPU-05. It seems to run well for the most part, but I get some strange (non-intrusive) interactions every so often (on pitch bends and such).

Yesss! I was hoping they would play. I love Infinity Shred, and I missed them last time I was in NYC.

Sorry, I heard the city basically shuts down for SXSW, so I don't know what the cab situation is like. I'll figure it out when I get there, I suppose. I'm really excited now, thanks guys.

I'll see you at the second one, that'll probably be the first show we see.
What's public transportation like during SXSW? I've never been to Texas before, and we're staying at a hotel which is around 10 minutes away (driving).

I can never stick to one thing, but I'm most familiar with Ableton, Renoise, and Reaper. I've been obsessed with LSDj lately, it sounds great with my Monomachine and OP-1, which I suppose are really just software tied to hardware. For VST's I really like the VallhallaDSP plug-ins, Reaktor, Absynth, and MAX/MSP. I'm trying to move away from my computer, the Gameboy goes great with headphones in the park, but then I have to wear pants.

oh heck yes +1 for the OP-1. I've owned both LSDJ and an OP-1 for ages, but only recently got around to combining the two. I think i'm going to try and bust this combo out at the squaresounds pre-party

I don't want to derail this, but I'm curious to know how you use them together for live stuff. Running tape loops, or just noodling on one synth with the keys over the top, etc.

I can figure out a fluid way to switch between tape loops.

Nice, I'm pretty new to chipmusic beyond the more well-known artists, but I at least recognize Star Fighter Dreams. I'll check out the rest and drag my friends along.

Aw man, I'm gonna miss both of those. I'll be there from the 13th - 15th, but I'll probably have to head home before Anamanaguchi plays.
I'll keep an eye on TXChip though, thanks!

Edit: Oops, nevermind. I leave on the 16th big_smile

I've got a free ride to Southby this year, any chip shows I should attend?
Otherwise I'll have to get trashed and listen to garage rock.

Thanks! Let me know if anyone wants custom made audio watermarks, I find they add a much needed human element to your product.

I'm new to this forum, but I'd love to make a track for this.
