works really well.  i'm not sure the material quBit used to get it to all stay together, some sort of an adhesive that will hold metal and silicon i guess.  i can't really see any, but its a very tight and solid fit.  i'm assuming an adhesive...

there is nothing between the silicon and the silver. i just cut off a part from the silicone and molded it into silver directly. so you can just slide the silver into the silicon.
thank you for the nice review wink

quBit, how many manhours do you think goes into a set like this?

also, metal buttons are conductive (unless they are coated with something which isn't, of course).  one could conceivably 'wire' up these buttons and create contact points to do 'stuff'.

i'm not sure why, just a thought.

like a cracklebox.

for example, you'd need one 'master pole' to touch, then you could tap the metal buttons to trigger things.  events, glitches, whatever.

this way the buttons won't be contact points, unless this master pole is touched as well.

this could work...   and be pretty cool.  with any conductive metal of course.

its at least 4hours of handwork for a set like that.
well yea thats an good idea i guess. its possible with the silver and should be possible with the upcoming aluminum sets as well. you can experiment around with it when you recieve your set wink

guys, im fine with "different" comments. i just didnt like the fact that bit shifter called it a "silly modification". i dont call somebodys work silly just because i dont like or i would feel silly buying it. it thats all smile

Good golly, solid silver buttons. What next. Though I have to agree with Bit Shifter, it takes a bit more than just swapping in some silver buttons to make it art IMO. For example, many PC case mods (over the top example) I would call art, but they are often changing far more than a few buttons.

Bit Shifter wrote:

tacky indulgent bling = not really art

sure just molding buttons isnt art. same like painting a shell in one color isnt art.
but then there are paintjobs and other customisations on shells i'd call art. and there will be customisations i'll do to those buttons that you could call art because goldsmithing is an art.

I don't think anyone's opposed to modifications in general, and I don't think anyone's trying to abridge anyone else's freedom to make buttons out of whatever substance they like. Personally I, as one individual, see this modification, specifically, as silly, expensive, and nonutilitarian, and consequently I am expressing that opinion accordingly. All are free both to disagree and to buy (or forge) Game Boy buttons made of precious metals.

yea there are alot of people who think buying jewelry is a waste of money. but hey some people like to spend money for beautyful things that has no use but looking pretty. some people see the fascination in handcrafted useless things. and i as a goldsmith count on those people. its fine if you dont like it but please try to see the other side and dont call someones hard work silly.
man.. i really thought the famous bit shifter wouldnt be such a negative guy.. thats sad

But yeah, this thread wasn't really out of line, I've seen worse. If it's constructive, I don't really see anything wrong with people expressing their opinion. But some negativity I've seen can be unnecessary and redundant.

true.. true.... ^^

Moding like this a gameboy is art. But you shouldn't produce that thinking that people would buy like they buy plastic buttons. Of course a few will buy, there are stupid people who thinks that the gameboy must be pretty.

This reminds me of guitars... But if a guitar is too cheap it sounds like it.
An expensive gameboy in the other hand...

EDIT: What I'm trying to say is that I liked the idea, but I would never buy and I really hope it makes profit, guess that's why is so expensive. It's silver, for fuck sake. But it defeats the purpose of making music on it anyway.

well, i know this wont sell like plastic buttons do =P im just offering this because i really like it and im happy about some orders but also fine without orders. i guess the aluminum version will get some better feedback. and if not.. its fine. i mainly did this for myself anyways. im not trying to make the big money here =P

Taking so much care of a game boy beats the purpose of using one.
You people need to start focusing your brilliant minds into other things, like MAKING MUSIC.

making music is one thing, having sick looking gear is another thing. i like both wink
making music is art, modifying gear is art too. i dont see the problem of doing both =P

Wouldn't silver get all corroded from your finger sweat? Wouldn't stainless steel or chrome be better?

well of course you need to take care of the buttons a little bit. what could happen is that they could oxidate, that always depends on your sweat. but you can wear silver rings, too, right? so if you take care not to use the buttons right after eating lots of finger food and maybe wipe over them with a cloth sometimes it should be fine. im also going to check out if i maybe can include polishing-cloth to every set.

hi everyone!

so today i finished my first set of 935/000 silver buttons.
(925 is sterling with 92,5% silver, rest copper. this is 93,5% silver)
this first set is reserved for kitsch wink

KLICK FOR LARGER PICTURE

so i am planning to do alot of more 8bit and especially buttons stuff with different metals. im working on aluminium buttons right now that can be colored. and there will be more stuff coming for sure smile

so i'll sell "polished silver buttons sets" for 140dollar/95euro and "sandblasted silver button sets" for 80dollar/55euro.
they will be stamped "935".
and ask me if you'd like to have any customizations. you could have gemstones in the buttons, engravings,... there are alot of possibilities wink

i won't be able to do anything in the next two weeks because i'll be in holidays. but i'll take orders in this time and start working around the 27th of june again. also i won't take too many orders at a time because even though i dont mold them by myself because i dont have the tools and so on, everything else is handcrafted by me and it needs alot of time to finish a set depending on "polished" or sandblasted", custiomizations,...
AND you have to send me your start/select rubber so i can cut it and fit the molding with it, OR i send you the whole set with the start/select molding and you have to cut the rubber yourself (i'm gonna add a pic that explains it soon)

for ordering, and questions about customizations contact me at:
qubitmobile AT googlemail DOT com

feel free to tell me your opinions or ask questions in this thread, too, of course smile

your 8bit goldsmith ;D
