Haha, yup. It wasn't meant as complaint exactly, more like a well deserved ribbing. I mean, how is this not ripe for parody? I wonder if Pharrel was secretly a huge anime otaku and this is like his coming out party? Do you think he cried at the end of Azumanga Daioh and thought "Is it really a crime for a young African-American pop star to be moe? Nobody will ever understand how kawaii I really am..." That would make my day in a way.

"Hey dudes, it's me, Pharrel Williams! Can I have your culture for a sec? Just looking to make a quick buck on whatever's hot, LMAO! Don't worry, we'll credit those Japanese guys you love so much or whatever. This is me being a KAWII-chiptuning-vaporwavist-seapunk, ROFL. You'll buy it right guys? Haha, of course you will. BECAUSE I'M HAPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE."
Sorry, had to get that out of my system. I'll admit it's a cool video in it's own right. The credits really tell you a lot about whoever put this together too. Too much amazing work has gone uncredited for too long.

Re: Converting inspiration and feelings into songs (21 replies, posted in General Discussion)
Personally I try to take things that I have feelings/thoughts about and try to convey that through music. I used to be a serious lyricist when I was younger, writing mostly topical political songs. Now that I'm making chiptune as my primary musical project, I've been trying to use my songs to tell more personal stories. Some turn out more like expository nature writing, or even like the condensed overture for a little play, but a lot of them can be summed up in a single sentence: "Emotions run wild as young love develops" or "Don't let the burdens of adult life dull your childlike wonder at the universe" or "Playing Outrun at a pizza parlor during a sweet birthday party circa 1994". Keeping that seed concept in mind, the song (hopefully) develops into a representation of that feeling.
All things considered, it seems like inspiration is where you find it. It's an incredibly personal phenomenon. Some writers have a story to tell that drives and informs their songs, some have a person who they use as a muse, some have drugs, some have emotional torment and/or fulfillment, others use and recycle other media. Maybe the question isn't so much "where does one get inspiration" but "where do I get inspiration". To me it seems like the answer to that should be easy. People usually know what they like.

This is great. You're like a Gothic Chiptune Elvis Costello or something. That's a complement, haha.

Sarcastic and well-deserved ribbing aside, this does look pretty interesting. How is it mostly Hip-Hop dudes though? Is there a significant Hip-Hop/chiptune crossover thing going on out there that I'm just not aware of?

Re: What's the craziest thing you've done... (54 replies, posted in General Discussion)
I made an electronic/ambient/dark & spooky album by recording found sounds and electronic interference/static. That doesn't sound that cool or crazy, but the cool part is that I did it all in the reportedly haunted basement of a 100 year old house that I was living in. I recorded a little bit of guitar and some almost-static programing from a radio I found down there too, so it's not strictly found sounds. I should go dig that album up and put it on bandcamp...

Just wondered, what happened to everyone here? It looks like an active scene at the time?
I hope those dudes are still making music. It was really interesting to see each artist they featured incorporating vocals. That would have been a cool show to attend...

Rad man, looking forward to seeing what video oddities you cooked up with that Fisher-Price camera.
We've got a foster cat and two strays that showed up at dinner time, then decided to live with us. I wasn't really a cat (or pet) person, but I like the furry little buggers more now than ever. Constant cat shenanigans around here...

Dude, I'm moving pretty fast, but you're picking up speed in a big way. If I were you I'd get to work on a whole passel of new songs ASAP. You're material is evolving with every song too... "Pizza" is the happy funtime jam to the max! Thanks for your rad words. You're one of the dudes who pushes me forward and keeps me invested. I'm stoked to be here and to have the good fortune to be decent enough at music to actually make something people are into. It's not for lack of work of course, but I don't know. I feel lucky.

Also, I have a cat named Margret Catwood.

"Solid" is a good way to put it. I feel like there's a lot of things that you could call it, but solid really sums it up. And thanks J3wel, I listened to your stuff on soundcloud months ago but didn't follow you for some reason? (For how long I've been using the web I kinda wish I was more on top of my game sometimes...) Your stuff is great dude, especially "No Notion" hadn't heard that one yet.

I like how your first 4 months is better than my 20.
I seriously doubt that, but I hear the sentiment. Really glad you like it man! It's some pretty happy-go-lucky stuff for the most part, and I know that might turn some people off, but those who listen carefully will find it's a little more than just major scales everywhere... I'm stoked you're into that. Thanks for the critique!

Well, it's finally done. It was a busy four months, but out of roughly 35 songs here are the ones that made it. Credit goes out to Ypmid for mixing and mastering the album, as well as taking a much-appreciated advisory role. It wouldn't have been the same without his contributions. Also a big thanks to cool art kid NEON for making some sweet cover art. It would have just been sub-standard gradients and rainbows if I had done it myself.
