I've been looking around the net to find a cheap place to buy the shell or casing of a dmg, but haven't found much. Are there any providers who sell the shells or reproductions of them? It's for custom cases ect.

I saw these but I was worried they wouldn't be very good for custom paintjobs because of the type of plastic used, can anybody tell me if they've painted these cases before?

matt's mind

its ABS plastic, the same material the original cases are made from.  although the surface finish is a finer matte than the originals.  holds paint fine

(someone that paints more than me can comments more thoroughly on that part though)

Kitsch Boys are great for painting.
If you're really concerned with adhesion; rough up the surface with 200-250 grit sand paper, and put down a THIN layer of white primer before you start.
Rust-O-Leum Painters Touch is a great paint to use. Good adhesion, excellent coverage, smooth coat, dries fast, good color selection, inexpensive.
NOTE: If you're going to ad a clear coat, use Duplicolor lacquer clear. Enamel clear will wrinkle up your paintjob.

I have about 40 grey boy shells in good shape if you would like to buy a bunch of them. I can include brand new battery contacts and original ground shields and possibly screws. Feel free to PM me if you're interested.

As long as were on the subject, would you happen to have any spare yellow dmg shells you could part with?
