I'm trying that solution to get it working on OS X but whenever I try to connect to any of the servers I get this stupid error
has anyone got it working on a mac?
also: version .98D is the alpha they have out, which isn't available for mac :\

Yeah, it's a server client mismatch. You need the same version of Skulltag that all the other MM8BDM users (or rather, servers) are using. AFAIK those Skulltag builds for Linux should be ready, but I dunno about Mac OSX. You could always compile it yourself if you're feeling impatient.

I dunno about other OSs, but on Linux I've got an option for 'testing builds' so I can have multiple version of Skulltag, and it automatically picks the right version.
