I have a grey one that, after I put in a pro-sound and backlight, now has this same problem. For me, it's not really just the samples.. It's any sound on the wav channel. And if I mute that channel or solo another, that weird distortion still comes through. I've been trying to figure this out for a while but no one seems to know why this happens sometimes.

Wow, herr prof. You call that noise issue, I call it glitch kit. Maybe if you sampled some more examples of this people would like it to use them around...

i have a gameboy like this. i have messed around with it. mine actually has strange sounding sqaures as well. it came like that when i bought it from the thrift store.

my particular gameboy had a sticker that a little kid put on it with his name. i have dubbed it the carter gameboy and have always referred to it as the carter phenomenon.

Does it have a funny haircut and speak in a Laaaahndahn accent?

(Sorry, couldn't help it. Love that band! smile )

carter gameboy plays first and has obvious problems with samples. it also has grainy sounding squares. normal gb is clear as a bell.

comparison of pulse wave shape

Carter game boy vs stock normal game boy square waves
starts off with carter . ends with normal.

first section is pu1 playing c3 in different dutycycles. second section is pu1 and pu2 playing c3 in the different duty cycles.

Obvious difference in pulse waves. carter sounds more muffled and less crisp.

carter first then normal.

comparisons done under the same settings and conditions. no changes were made to the recordings.

For some reason the carter sounds more loud. they are both set at full volume and the input settings ar un changed on my computer.
there is also buzz during play back that isnt heard in the normal gameboy.
both are gray boys. i dont know about the numbers tho. i have to check.

neither of these guys were prosounded or have had any modifications what so ever.

All the samples sound that bad, so I dont think the pak would have much variety. Fuck a Glitch.

So how rare are these CPU-01s and 02s?  I just got one on accident the other day, and if they're super hard to get I'd feel a bit guilty modding it.

So this isn't so much as issue with bleepbloop carts as it is with the dmg itself correct? I'm having issues with the wav channel. It seems like it kind of clicks weird or something, and it always sounds like crap. Or am I just doing it wrong?

clicks can be very much a part f the wav channel.. post an audio example or try an example off one of the lsdsng archives for comparison.

Nex informed me about this same issue.
I have 3 of these boards if anyone wants to get them from me.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I have this exact same problem with my DMG (don't have it on me right now so I can't check the model exactly). As soon as a note plays on another channel, the wav channel glitches out and sounds horrible.

I just ordered two more DMGs, really hoping they don't have the same problem! sad

oh i forgot to do the wav sound comparison. well then... i got something to do tonight!

I couldn't listen to the sample posted here, but here's a sample of the problem I had (first the wav channel, then the pulse channel, then both together)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/h1rnnf

One thing I noticed after I made the file is that the two channels don't have to be playing together; once one note is played on the pulse channel while the wave kit is playing, the wave kit will sound messed up until you stop and start the song again (without the pulse channel)

@concealed: This actually sounds like the exact problem we are talking about. Even with out the pulse channel your samples dont sound right.

If you listen to this you will notice the samples are much clearer. There is a lot less fuzz and hum on a properly working DMG.

The end part is just drums and thats where you will hear the difference.
