Hi!

I found that Dealextreme has a couple of cheap and crappy netbooks.

And the rest:

Is it possible to run any trackers or old music apps on it? I'm not that familiar with Windows CE.

i have found netbooks to suck for music production when it come to using CPU power.. BUT... programs such as renoise run perfectly fine as long as you stick to sample triggering and midi... NO PLUG-INs.

so i would then like to think that... if these netbooks are far superior to old CPU's such as Amiga/Commodore that they should be able to run old trackers just fine...
But i haven't attempted personally.. I think cTrix uses his netbook to run a C64 tracker emulator.

These are ARM-based with Windows CE, that means you can't run usual Windows x86 software on them. I don't know any trackers or music software for WinCE. The closest thing I can recall is Windows Mobile version of MilkyTracker.

Oooh, cheap arm! You can run a good number of posix compatible OSes on arm, assuming it's the right chipset. WinCE is teh crap though.

I'd love to have a super portable netbook for running amiga trackers and the like.  Netbook AHX anyone?

I have two Windows CE devices that I am able to run Sunvox on. Besides that, there's Phoenix Studio (rebirth-like acid kind of deal), but I don't know how they perform on these netbooks.

EDIT: It seems like some of them are able to run Android

Sunvox is good.  If these could run it well that would be a great deal.

P.S.  There is in fact a windows CE make of milky for ARM.  It is an old binary however.  VICE doesn't look to support CE.  PocketUAE for Amiga would support this.  There is a tracker called Tokotracker I think.  Theres emulation for more systems like NES but I wouldn't think a netbook is suited to that.

We use winuae to run octamed as well as nestopia on a stock asus 901 eeepc for what it's worth. Not really sure if this answers anything. big_smile

Could someone see if XPMCK and PPMCK compile properly on one of these bad boys?  That'd be the tits.

These things have a gnarly proprietary system on a chip (the ones I've encountered, that look like the first link - in various colours, are all Via/Wondermedia VT8500 and WM8505s). Inbuilt speakers are horrid, lineout is okay. Linux support is on its way - there are Linux distros available for both the 8500 and 8505 based machines, but as yet no fully open-source kernel, and so audio support is patchy.

For the 8505 you should find resources at http://bento-linux.org/
