I didn't see other posts about this here, so I thought I'd mention an interesting hardware synth I saw via Palm Sounds.

I/O:

    * mono audio output and input (input is sent to filter/VCA).
    * MIDI in/out.
    * 3 CV inputs (0-5V) on pin header.
    * TX/RX/RST pins for onboard programming with an usb->serial chip.

Interface:

    * 12 LEDs (current page / modulation matrix visualization).
    * 2x16 LCD display.
    * 5 switches to navigate through 12 parameter pages.
    * 4 pots for patch editing (4 parameters per page).
    * 2 inc/dec switches.

2 digital oscillators:

    * Available for Osc1&Osc2:
    * band limited wavetables: pulse, square (with pulse-width modulation), triangle with waveshapping, sawtooth.
    * Available only for Osc1:
    * sawtooth with sweepable resonance (casio cz-like).
    * simplistic FM.
    * lo-fi vowel synthesis (think “speak and spell”).
    * cheap 8bit waveforms with plenty of aliasing.
    * cheap square/PWM with even more aliasing.
    * colored noise.
    * 32 waveforms sweepable wavetable.
    * “sweep” oscillator which scans through all the waveforms.
    * Noise & sub-oscillator.

Modulation and filtering:

    * CEM3379 filter.
    * 2 LFO (square, sawtooth, triangle, sample & hold), syncable to tempo & MIDI clock.
    * 2 ADSR envelopes.
    * 16-steps step sequencer.
    * 14 patchcords modulation matrix (16 modulation sources, 11 destinations). Modulation sources include MIDI controllers, pitch bend wheel and modulation, CV inputs, gater…

Performance:

    * Arpeggiator with 15 different patterns + each of them with direction and octave setting.
    * Support for (some) indian/arabic scales.
    * “Patch performance” page in which 4 user-selectable parameters can be assigned to the 4 editing pots.

Others:

    * MIDI implementation with patch load/save by SysEx, patch editing by NRP.
    * Patch memory: 16 patches."

Yeah.  It'll be interesting to see the cost for PCBs and parts.  I'm starting to look forward to this more than the OP-1, especially after teenage engineering said the OP-1 was going to cost about $700.

I didn't know he'd released any of this stuff yet.  I'll have to keep a closer eye on it and see if he gets to a release point on the board.

That and a parts list and it's some DIY synth goodness!

"Playing with the Shruti-1 proto and a fat oscillator stack (osc1: pwm ; osc2: saw, slightly detuned ; square sub-oscillator mixed at 50%). Later, the volume of osc2 and the sub-oscillator is set to 0, and I scan through the waveform shapes (note that there's a fair amount of PWM routed to osc1)"

I'm Olivier, the guy who designed this thing and is eagerly waiting for the final iteration of the PCB smile Thanks for linking to my project!

I have to admit that the Shruti-1 was not designed with a "soundchip" state of mind (mainly because I know emulating a SID or YM2149 is a very different affair from "phase < 0x8000 ? 255 : 0" running at 32kHz) - I tried to cover different aspects of classical synthesis. But some of its modulation capabilities and the overall rawness of the sound makes it decent for soundchip-inspired music. It emulates what would have been the SID in an alternate universe in which time flew backwards and Bob Yannes designed the SID chronologically-after, historically-before the ESQ-1.

It uses a triangle wave and a vowel oscillator and I play with the step sequencer cycle-length and later the arpeggiator's octave range.

The Shrut-1 is one of the most exiting projects I've seen lately, and I really think I'll get get as soon as it's ready! Though I don't really know how it will be released...
