When I was doing the PCB layout, I made sure to leave the UART 1 TX/RX pins available for future use. I did a quick search and found an existing MIDI interface board that even has PIC32 C sample code. If you wanted to, you could sacrifice the console debugging and reassign UART 2 to this board as well...
I WANT THIS! It would be so cool, to have something like nesserial in my hands. Batsly Adams doesn't work anymore on his project - I hope this can be kind of a successor of his (with more awsumnezzzz-features!)

oh god this is so cool.
i second the idea of a NES mmo alongside all the benefits this has for chip. that too would be amazing.
I really don't see a river city random 2 wiiware game coming out at this point unless it gets shifted to wii u or 3ds
