hey friends : D

so i have been considering purchasing a commodore 64 and learning to program, etc.. however before i do i figured i'd ask this question:

i have an atari 65xe and i was wondering if i can do the same things with that that i could with a c64.. is it worth getting a c64?

thanks : D

I wouldn't expect so. Th c64 has a different sound chip,l and the 65xe doesn't. Sorry!

Arghhh, this was first ever Atari i saw at the computer programming club back in 1987. Afaik this has 1-bit speaker like Speccy 48k, so nothing extra.

WTF 1bit "speaker" or "nothing extra"???

Atari got 4 channels with stereo upgrade you have 8 channels.
And sounds beautiful, sounds are like on NES or GAMEBOY, ATARI ST.
Atari 65XE is ATARI 800XE...

Commodore's SID chip is deservedly one of the most famous, if not THE most famous, 80s sound chip. Whatever your atari has in it, it's definitely not like SID.

C64 and XL have different sound chips yes, but there's a broad similarity in the types of sound chips they have. (witness Rob Hubbard's work on both systems)  On the Atari side the sound is a bit more "harsh" and you don't get filters, but they're both pretty nice chips to experiment with.

Both systems use a version of the 65xx processor so if you learn assembly on one you can adapt it for another.  Personally I'd say buy the c64 because there's a ton more editors and so on there, and the community is (arguably) more active.
