I wonder how it would work out if, during a live show that is also being ustreamed, the chatroom was projected onto a wall. It'd be like being there.

I saw that with a NicoNicoDouga event, the scrolling comments were projected behind the stage during a speech. A new speaker was introduced and you could hear applause at the venue, followed by flying ribbons of "888888888" (a symbol for applause) over their heads...

I like it too.
But what about spam and inappropriate comments?

I guess everyone hates spam, and real-life viagra ads or people flooding would ruin the gig

Depends on the gig. If it's a seapunk thing, I'm sure viagra ads would be a perfect fit.

Seeing as some of the Southeastern states of the US (Alabama, Georgia, most of Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana) still have no idea of what chip music is, there is lots of ground to tread. The Bible Belt culture that is so popular lends itself more towards rock, country, ratchet, and pop. It is rare that I play a DJ set and play dubstep (including Skrillex).

I've managed to get a regular thing going, playing a chip DJ set and playing my own material. Mostly house parties. However, I'm fortunate to be living near a huge college campus with decent musical exposure. I think that chip will not catch on so long as the South remains the South (except in college towns). For a hundred years the people here have idolized sung words, guitar playing, and (mis)translated words written in red. The reception to electronic music in general is poor due to religious undertones ("electronic music = rave = drugs = ticket to hell" sort of ideology) so the only artists we have seen in Alabama are Bassnectar and Pretty Lights. Currently I am breaking into the local jazz scene, booking some gigs and stuff. That's how I have been incorporating my chip stuff for the public, and so far it is well received amongst the scene regulars.

I think that Lexington and Atlanta would be good hubs for chip in the South, seeing as they are bigger cities, one being accessible, the other having Solarbear and his amazing BRKfest-rearing festival organization skills. Colleges are near/in both towns, and have healthy bar scenes (unlike Birmingham, where police are everywhere due to murders). Other than those two cities I don't see chip thriving very much at all around here.

I don't want to hijack, but yes Milwaukee can (and has). It's a matter of proper venue, adequate press and motivated locals. I've seen shows with a turnout of 2 people and shows with a turnout of 600 people. Personally, I've been working on an official event for a while now. These things take time here.

I'd like to know how this goes. Steering jazz into a modern or fusion direction where I live makes people think of jam-band stuff like Phish and Widespread Panic which is not an awful thing...

There are some guys "by" me who throw trance and dubstep parties mainly between Savannah and Statesboro (again appealing to colleges but whatever works.) To me, the toughest barrier in the South is how far apart things are. All the cities named have the same thing in common for me: although they are several distances apart, I can reach them all after a day of driving provided I have a hotel night after the gig, so it's impossible to just show up after work, pop in and go home late. That's the difference when you're in a major city.

Hey - that's great!  If there's any way that I can help (even just moving equipment and stuff), just let me know.  Also, I've got a dead lock on the plinky tween crowd. wink

i think things are going pretty nicely.
Active development, creative musicians, thats all i care about really. But then i am stuck in china so i dont hold my breath for much shit going on here chipmusic wise.
im pretty happy that there exists people mixing 8 bit with other styles. So bravo Noisewaves, boys club, J Arthur Keenes.
Im also glad that decent electronic music like monodeer is seen as decent electronic music in 2012. Like i can play that shit in a set and i dont have to announce its a chiptune or anything like that it, people just appreciate it for being good electronic music.
You know, it would be nice to see J Arthur Keenes on The Voice. And that he got picked by Christina and won. That would be amusing and awesome in equal measures.
seriously though, im happy as long as chipmusic doesnt do some absurd merging with EDM and go radio mainstream. I know this type of pop shit is incorporating 8 bit sounds, im talking more like lady gaga singing over gameboy music......until that happens i will refrain from killing myself.
