I do not know much about what dubstep is but I hear that Burial is dubstep http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv7N9wf42cs

I think he got tagged as being dubstep becuase it's on hyperdub, to me it's a lot more ambient/2step. Really lush, one of my all-time fave artists.

Dubstep started as 2-step, there's no real definition. Check the first Dubstep Allstars comp/mix, not a half-step in sight. It's all garagey...

If there's anything that isn't dubstep in the scene it's the aggro/wobble stuff... no dub.

Fucking Vex'd or Kode9 all the way. Most of today's dubstep has suffered the retarded infection of UK mainstream appeal, and is now a mass of clowny wobble that belongs in a carnival or circus. (Read: Benga)
The old guys are the ones who keep it dirrrrty.

This.

Though I don't see why Benga gets such a hard time on this, there are many more producers going further down that road. He doesn't seem to be deserving of the'lowest common denominator' description people keep giving of him. I still have a lot of respect for his work.

Rusko and his many clones are probably the prime example of the problem...

ACTUAL MUSIC now: Listen to Loops Haunt. "Like Autechre making Grime". Fucking awesome

+1 for 16bit. bad a s s!

have a look at the recent hyperdub compilation for a good round up.

My personal suggestions also relevant to the chiptune scene are:
Zomby
Quarta 330 (a fellow tokyo resident)

Cheers Keff. No downloads though...
Not too sure about those last two on the myspace either.. hmm

Zomby's 'One Foot Ahead of the Other' is a brilliant little record... Chipish 2-step mostly. I Highly recommend it, and the zomby EP.

Pretty endemic of the whole wobble/growl borefest that dubstep seems to have become, but it is built around samples of legendary UK quiz show Family Fortunes and has Les Dennis in it so at least it's funny!

Yeah man i hate how a lot/most of dubstep is just quite boring.
edit
Well a lot of time stuff isnt worth listening to without proper speakers.

Can anyone reccomend any different or perhaps more upbeat dubstep artists/songs,

The wobble stuff's mostly more successful because it comes through well enough on crappy speakers, due to teh large amount of (to give it the proper technical term...) 'Mid-range khack'.

so what really defines dubstep and how would one make a dub step song in something like LSDJ.

Rei the best bet is to listen to a bunch of the artists posted here

generally slow tempo and heavy on bass content (getting into more detail is pointless I think)

In terms of doing it in LSDJ turn the tempo down and get a killer bass sound... I think "how to make genre x with tool x" discussions are often very far from the point of making music.. listen to some of these artists if you like it feel free to emulate or try and capture what they do through another medium

Whoever suggested Loops Haunt (infotoxin)
AMAZING thank you so much for others check this mix out

I also really love the ridiculous wobble stuff, I know they take it seriously but I think it is hilarious fun
